The Galibier Fire Feet Knee Highs are an excellent value merino option. They are comfortable and easy to get on and off; provide suitable warmth; and have simple care instructions.

Let’s address the elephant in the room: the knee-high nature. Is it really necessary? I’ve gone around the roundabouts on this one. Galibier claims that the added compression is one benefit of the height, which I can see, but while testing this was largely unnoticeable. Then there’s the added warmth, but I can’t honestly say my shins are ever the first point of failure on a winter ride.

The socks are a blend of 40% merino, 40% acrylic, 18% polyamide, and 2% lycra. This mix provides an excellent balance between warmth and comfort; they are noticeably soft and easy to put on. They are relatively thick for cycling socks, but not to a fault; it merely provides a reassuring sense of warmth. Aimed at cold-weather riding, they provide a decent level of insulation, though they aren’t boilers for your feet. On the coldest days, I would still recommend pairing them with an oversock or overshoe.

Galibier has done an excellent job at keeping the price low. While many merino socks come in above the £20 mark, such as the Defeet Cylismo and the GripGrab Alpine, the Fire Feet are excellent value at just over £15 – half the price of some Spatz offerings.

Overall, the Fire Feet Knee Highs are comfortable, well-made winter socks that hit the sweet spot between warmth, comfort, and value. Are knee-highs really necessary? Probably not, but they do feel snug, warm, and just a bit fancy. For just over £15, these socks deliver on all fronts and give you a reason to show off your shins in style.

These are an excellent value option for merino socks, providing good warmth and impressive comfort. Yet, in the coldest of rides they don’t quite keep up. And I’m not convinced the knee height is much more than a gimmick.
