OneUp has just graduated from the Colin Chapman school of engineering with its new, 303g XC Clip Pedals, claiming they are now the thinnest dual-sided MTB pedals money can buy.

“Simplify, then add lightness” is one of the most memorable quotes from Lotus founder Colin Chapman. Sure, he might have been talking about 1950s sports and racing cars at the time, but the sentiment still rings true today. If you can create a simple, well-engineered product, you’re already on your way to making something lightweight and reliable.

It was this quote that sprang to mind when details of the latest OneUp Components XC Clip Pedals landed in my inbox earlier this week.

Measuring just 26.8mm thick (measured from the binding, the body alone is just 14.4mm), OneUp claims its XC Clip Pedal is the thinnest dual-sided MTB clipless pedal on the market. By whittling away any unnecessary material from the body and keeping the profile so slim, OneUp has also achieved an impressively low weight of just 303g per pair, and it hasn’t had to skimp on features to get there.

For example, the XC Clip uses a custom binding mechanism that is fully SPD-compatible, so there’s no need to swap or change cleat systems. The binding features integrated cleat ramps for consistent release, along with 12° of rotation with 5° of float.

To ensure spare parts availability and long-lasting trail performance, the XC Clip shares the same rebuild kit as the OneUp Wave and Clip Pedals. It features Igus bushings and two dual-sealed cartridge bearings running on a tough chromoly axle. To encourage at-home maintenance, OneUp also supplies a Pedal Bearing Nut Tool with every pair of XC Clip Pedals.

Of course, the lightweight, minimalist design will appeal to the weight-weenies among you, but it also makes sense from an on-trail performance perspective. A thinner body is less likely to strike rocks and roots, while the 75 x 68mm platform should still provide ample support alongside the binding mechanism.
