Sky TDF Team - looks poor!
After watching stage 2, I noticed that all but 3 of the sky riders got dropped on the cat 2 climb 12 k from the finish. In fact, only Froome and Porte, made it over the top with the bunch, EBH managed to get back on the way down. Surely this does not look good for the high muntain passes and summit finishes. If Froome is going to win it, he wont have much help.
It looks like SKY used the main guys helping wiggins, and froome will pay the price in my opinion. Well he will have to win it the hard way.
this would have been my team, would have had wiggo but he is injured.

Contador won the TdF without a team to help him, I'm sure Froome can do the same, but I fancy a Spanish alliance to try and hurt him
yeah that is true, but Contador also had some special Spanish steaks to help him through the difficult stages!
maybe Froome can ask Contador for the name of his supplier.
Well to open a can of worms (given the inevitable talk about doping) yesterday's performance by the team, or lack of performance to be exact, does at least ring true with a team riding clean to me.
On another note, it also highlights that the team is a 'bit light on experience' imho too. The rest day couldn't have come soon enough but with Kiryienka gone I have a feeling we might see some teaming up to beat Froome, as per last years Vuelta) again soon!
I agree, with the rest day, then tt and flat stages lets hope they can regroup and get a second wind. EBH might have to put any stage aspirations to bed for now and just keep his powder dry for the inevitable attacks from Movistar. Kiriyenka will be a massive miss though, no denying that and some just sitting in the pack is required now.
Looks like this thread will run and run. But at least they have a few days off to recover, in which time hopefully Froome can stretch his advantage on the ITT. Even Mont Ventoux is a one off, but the last week could be a week of hell. Epic.
ow dear sky had a shocker, and had Vasil Kiryienka eliminated. Thomas is still injured, looks froome will have to do it the hard way,
that is *really* bad news for sky. they're not really known for having a plan b, either. hope G's on the mend cause they're going to need him
well after the first big GC stage, I thought I would post a update. The team faired better than I thought. Thoughts on a couple of riders.
1. Peter Kennaugh. Took me by surprise, he did a super turn, especially on the downhill section.
2. Vasil Kiryienka. Did a massive turn, up to his usual high standards.
3. David López. What happened to him? normally solid in the mountains.
overall the team was better than I thought. If Henao and Uran were in the team, I think sky could have put even more time into the rivals. If Uran were there, final standings could have been a sky 1,2,3.
Not a bad day.
More doom and gloom from people because Sky haven't won every stage so far !
The team is there for the mountains not the gentle slopes and the team were quite happy to tootle along and let the also rans have their day in the sun.
Mark my words once the race hits the big slopes we will see a much different team.

they don't need eight riders to look after froome on an easy cat 3 on a nothing stage for the GC. they're just having a day off, and they sent EBH up the road to have a go at the win
For me I'd have left out (sorry in advance) G, Kennaugh and EBH. In would go Bernie, Matt Hayman and Knees.
I feel bad about saying G but he is known for crashing!
That's exactly what I'd expect at this point - one man with Froome to keep him out of trouble whilst Orica Greenedge feel obliged to run the peloton in the yellow jersey. The rest of the team can save their legs for the mountain stages - pretty sure it's intentional!

Interesting though that Sky confirmed he wouldn't be selected nearly 4 weeks before the race, while Garmin left it till a couple of days before to see if Hesjedal was fit.
Of course, Sky thereby missed out on what would have been 4 weeks (plus another 3 in France) of the Wiggo vs Froome soap opera...
To the OP. I think that you are also neglecting the fact that because Froome is a climber the team don't need to ride the same way that they had to last year with Wiggo. Who is not a climber.
If Sky knew Froome was feeling good and had Porte for company just in case, then why should they expend energy with 17 more stages to ride? I didn't see Saxo or BMC lining up on the front in numbers either. It struck me as more of a 'classics' stage where numerical advantage is less important on short climbs like that one. Starting position is far more important and Froome rode well.
There's possibly a bit of bluffing going on with Sky too, they don't have to defend the yellow jersey for 2.5 weeks this time.
They do need a bit of balance - your team puts all their top guys in, so who's fresh to lead them in the Vuelta? I think Froome will be happy with guys like Kiryienka and Siutsou, who certainly won't be getting dropped on cat 2s this time next week.
Take your point though, they weren't looking great on Sunday - but we don't know how many of them were carrying knocks from Saturday's crash, and they all looked pretty strong yesterday.
If only Porte and Froome from Sky get over the HC climb on Saturday in the lead group, then I'll start to worry a bit - the Spaniards will be looking to gang up on Sky for sure!
