World Track Champs day 4: disappointment for Hoy and Pendleton as Australia dominate

Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton both had to settle for minor medals in their respective events on day 4 of the World Champs in Appledoorn, and both were edged out by Australia, who had another great day picking up three golds.

Hoy was well positioned in the Keirin as the Derny pulled out with three laps to go – though not in his favoured spot at the front – and Matt Crampton made the running until the bell when he was overtaken by Shane Perkins. Perkins had the run on Hoy and although the Scotsman worked hard to overhaul the Australian on the outside of the final bend, Perkins proved too strong, taking the line by a wheel.

Victoria Pendleton cruised through to the sprint semis to set up a showdown with Anna Meares. A tense first heat saw the Australian come over the top of Pendleton to take first blood, but a spirited second heat from the brit saw her come round the outside of Meares on the home stretch to force a decider. It wasn't to be though, with Meares forcing Pendleton onto the front in the final race before leading out final lap, and although Pendleton was in contention throughout she couldn't overhaul the Aussie. Pendleton easily overcame Olga Panarina of Belarus to take the bronze.

The Dutch crowd were finally rewarded for their support of the worlds with a home gold medal in the women's scratch race, with Marianne Vos taking the win in style. The big surprise of the day though was Team GB's Dani King, who showed great composure throughout to bag a bronze to add to here team pursuit gold. At only 20 years old, King is a precocious talent and it's proof that there's still strength in depth in team GB's squad, even if this World Champs has been a touch disappointing overall, with Australia dominant overall with a tally of six golds.
