Three Wise Men take to Boris bikes for Mayor's Christmas cards

Whitechapel schoolgirl designs picture that will accompany seasonal message from City Hall

Some Londoners might query just how wise the people who run the city are, but Christmas cards being sent out from Mayor Boris Johnson’s office this month depict the Three Wise Men riding the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme’s distinctive ‘Boris bikes.’

The Christmas cards were designed by Ellie Feldman, a Year 6 pupil at St Anne’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Whitechapel, one of five East London schools invited to take part in a competition to design the cards, which resulted in more than 250 cards being received, according to the East London Advertiser.

Ellie was congratulated personally by Mr Johnson yesterday when he popped in to morning assembly at the school. “This tremendously fun festive card caught my eye immediately - what an ingenious idea to place the Three Wise Men on our magnificent hire bikes,” he said. “It’s guaranteed to put a smile on everyone’s face and I’d like to thank the creative youngster who designed it for me.”

The cards are produced in support of the Mayor’s Fund for London, which backs projects including City Year, which is also supported by St Anne’s School.

Chris Robinson, director of the Mayor’s Fund, said: “Congratulations to Ellie for her inspired Christmas card design. We are delighted that her school, St Anne’s, is taking part in the excellent City Year scheme, which offers young people the opportunity to volunteer in inner city schools and help make a real difference to their own lives and those of the pupils.”
