Near Miss of the Day 139: The future in safe hands

Our regular feature highlighting close passes caught on camera from around the country – today it’s Manchester

Andy suffered this close pass by a Royal Mail lorry on Princess Road in Manchester.

The incident occurred on Thursday May 10.

Andy said: “The initial pass was too close but then it started to move across before clearing me.”

Andy points out that the logo on the rear of the lorry states: “The Future In Safe Hands.”

Princess Road was one of the roads being cycled by undercover officers in the early days of Greater Manchester Police’s close pass operation. A driver of a white van was warned after passing extremely an officer extremely closely near Withington tram stop.

> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

> What to do if you capture a near miss or close pass (or worse) on camera while cycling

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

The rider should have adopted a more dominant position. Golden rule is, drivers pass you wider if you're further away from the kerb. Not sure why it works, but it does, and you have escape room to your left if you're not on the yellow line.

Why HGVs always try to be on the left is puzzling. There is [supposed to be] a 30mph limit on Princess Parkway; they won't be holding up cars. Why be on the left where you will constantly meet cyclists, buses, left turning motorists. Most are going straight from the city out to the motorways, they don't plan to turn off. They should use the right lane on an urban duel carriageway.

I hope this was reported to Royal Mail?

As a public service, can I point out that there is nothing to see after 8s, so don't waste your time watching the rest.

P.S.A. nr 2 : TURN DOWN your speakers/headset before watching... What is that sound ? Camera mounted beside a playing card in the spokes ?
