British Cycling performance director Stephen Park has hailed the performances of British cyclists at this month’s Commonwealth Games with the riders set to return home with a record medal haul.
British riders have won 29 medals on the Gold Coast – nine gold, 12 silver and eight bronze – compared to 25 medals in Glasgow four years ago and 14 in Delhi in 2010.
Medals have included gold for Katie Archibald and silver for her brother John for Scotland in the individual pursuits last week, and most recently silver and bronze for Wales in the men’s and women’s road races today through Jon Mould and Dani Rowe.
British Cycling performance director, Stephen Park, said: “We’ve been pleased by the performances of British riders on the Gold Coast, which have once again demonstrated the talent, determination and strength in depth that we have within British cycling.
“From Elinor Barker and Mark Stewart’s victories in the points race, to the Team England one-two in the women’s mountain biking and victory along with new world records set for our tandem pairings of Neil Fachie and Matt Rotherham plus Sophie Thornhill and Helen Scott, there have been performances to savour from across the home nations.
“In addition to the results, the Commonwealth Games has provided a valuable opportunity for our younger riders to gain experience of competing at a high international level, and I’m sure they will take plenty of learnings away for this event to use at future major competitions.
“We’re now looking forward to welcoming back our riders as they kick on with their preparations for the Tokyo Olympics in just over two years’ time.”
