At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The Galibier Dolomiti skull cap is a quality bit of kit you'll be happy to have in your cool and cold weather clothing choices.

At colder times of year it can be a struggle to keep your head warm, especially with modern helmets adding more and more ventilation, so a cap of one sort or another is very useful. In really cold weather I'm a fan of the skull cap type to keep my ears warm too, and the Dolomiti fits the bill perfectly.

It looks good – so much so that I wear it for running and walking too – and its soft, stretchy 'Carvico Dolomiti' fabric is really comfortable and very light weight, to the point that you forget you are wearing it. Its thin construction, flat stitching and feathered edge make it a pleasure to have on your head, with no raised seams to rub or put pressure on the temple.

The thin, light material doesn't seem to be at the expense of its thermal capabilities, as it was nice and toasty down to minus temperatures, but breathes well so you don't cook at the opposite end of the scale.

As a result of the slim material choice, you shouldn't have to alter your helmet fit, which means that bit less messing around when getting ready to go out, or holding up your riding buddies leaving the nice warm cafe.

> The best clothing to keep you warm while cycling in winter

Weeks on, it still looks good after repeated use and washing – which it didn't need too often. A little like merino wool, it wicks well and doesn't smell too badly after repeated wear, although your mileage/use may vary.

At the price the cap is great value for such a useful addition to your cold weather kit, and highly recommended.

Verdict

A simple skull cap that is well made from a thin but thermal fabric and a great addition to your winter kit

Make and model: Galibier Dolomiti Skull Cap

Size tested: Large/Extra Large

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

A stylish skull cap to see you through the colder weather, with two sizes available to suit most heads, and made of a material called Carvico Dolomiti, hence the name – a brushed, ultra-thin fabric that is said to have the thermal properties of a material twice as thick.

Galibier says: "Our 2017 Skull cap gets its name solely from the fantastic fabric we have used:- Carvico Dolomiti, is a brushed, ultra-thin fabric, that has the thermal properties of a material twice as thick. It is very tightly woven, meaning no edge seams are needed. This 'Feather edge', and flat stitching, means warmth- without bulk, so you shouldn't need to adjust your helmet."

The fabric manufacturer says: "Dolomiti is a technical two-way stretch fabric with a perfect fit that follows the body's movements in a natural way. Its exceptional elasticity facilitates the production of clothing that neither constrains athletes nor limits their movement. Soft, comfortable, anti-pilling and abrasion resistant, Dolomiti guarantees optimal thermal protection that allows the natural evaporation of sweat so the athlete stays as dry as possible while maintaining a constant body temperature."

It's superlight too, folding down into a tiny parcel that won't take up much space in a jersey pocket if you need to stash it.

Rate the product for quality of construction:

8/10

Stitching on the seams was very neat and tidy.

Rate the product for performance:

9/10

Performance was excellent, keeping my head warm in temperatures approaching zero degrees, and on warmer days didn't lead to overheating; I didn't need to remove it on any of the rides I tested it on.

Rate the product for durability:

8/10

After a few weeks of wearing and washing, it still looks good and the material hasn't deteriorated at all. The seamless edge concerns me, but nothing untoward has happened.

Rate the product for fit:

8/10

The large I had on test fitted well, with some extra room (plus the material is quite stretchy) for larger heads.

Rate the product for comfort:

Very comfortable from the off, and after a few minutes you forget it's there – excellent.

Rate the product for value:

9/10

For the price it's easily the best skull cap I have used, a useful bit of kit that certainly won't break the bank.

How easy is the product to care for? How did it respond to being washed?

Washed with my other sports clothing, it didn't stretch or deform, and lost none of its colour or soft feel.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

For its intended use of basically keeping your head warm it was excellent, no downsides at all.

Tell us what you particularly liked about the product

For a simple item there was a lot to like – it looks good, fits snugly and does its job well in wintry conditions, to the point that I forgot I was wearing it, it was that comfortable.

High marks for comfort, looks and weight. My only slight concern would be for longterm durability if the seamless edge started to fray, but so far no problems.
