Police release pictures of suspected railway station bike thief

CCTV images show man police suspect responsible for string of thefts in Cambs & Beds

British Transport Police have released CCTV images of a man they want to question in relation to a series of bike thefts at railway stations in Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire earlier this year.

The thefts, which police believe are linked, took place at Hitchin (27 March), Sandy (1st May and 25th May), Huntingdon (6th May and 14th May), Biggleswade (3rd June) and Bedford (4th June).

PC Nigel Wakefield said: “We are hoping to identify the man in the images in connection with the thefts, which we are treating as linked.”

He continued: "Unfortunately, cycles are a popular target for thieves, and I would urge people to be vigilant. The best thing to remember is to register your bike and also to ensure a solid lock is used to secure it. If a bike is adequately marked, it makes it much easier to identify and therefore reduces its desirability to thieves."

Anyone who believes they know the identity of the man to call is asked to call British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 40 50 40, quoting incident number B7 22/07/2010 or to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

...and if the bike was worth over £1000 it would fall outside the remit of the blanket consumer credit licence which covers the scheme and the employer would need their own CCL at a cost of about £700.

Depends on their contracts - only employees paid via PAYE are eligible, so if the riders are paid in one off fee payments or are contractors, then they wouldnt be able to use the scheme...
