Welsh clothing company howies has just added the Lull jacket to its range, a lightweight and weather resistant jacket that looks like being ideal for the cooler temperatures and changeable weather of spring and autumn.
It’s not being pitched as a dedicated cycling-specific jacket as such, but it has all the technical features you would want in a stylish jacket ideal for less intensive cycle rides, such as riding to the shop/cafe/pub or shorter commutes when you don’t want to dress up in your finest Lycra.
- Buyer's guide to windproof cycling jackets + 10 of the best
The Lull jacket has been designed to be lightweight. To achieve this goal, howies used a 40gsm (grams per square metre) nylon outer fabric, first utilised in its Helium jacket. As well as being light, it's designed to keep the weather out. It’s windproof and a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish should ensure it keeps the odd shower or drizzle from soaking you. The fabric is also abrasion resistant so it should stand up to plenty of use.
The outer shell material is paired with a polyester micro-fleece lining, providing warmth to keep you from getting chilly on cold days. A tricot finish is said to provide a soft touch when worn against the skin, so you could wear it over a t-shirt.
Unlike the Helium jacket, the Lull has no hood so it can be worn with a helmet. There are plenty of useful details too. There are some reflective details to boost visibility when cycling, velcro adjustable cuffs, a contrast zip and drawcord adjustable hem.

The Lull jacket costs £59, is available in a range of sizes and two colour options. More at www.howies.co.uk

It's a shell suit (jacket).
I mean, I'm sure it's an okay jacket and all. But if you're going to start reviewing all non-cycling specific jackets that could also potentially have relevance to cycling then there are a heck of a lot of other jackets out there that you'll need to include. Barely scratched the surface of the proper outdoor brands. Howies is more lifestyle wear, what about Rab etc? This jacket is basically a cheaper variation on their classic Vapour Rise stuff, which also works brilliantly as a cooler weather albeit not very fitted cycling shell.
About 2 months too late for this summer.
