A cyclist who spent 30 minutes trapped under a car and had to be rescued by emergency services has spoken of his relief after he walked away with only cuts and bruises.
Justin Futers, 47, was pinned under a blue Chevrolet by his legs after he was dragged underneath during a collision on Saturday afternoon, almost being crushed under the front wheels.
His bike was destroyed in the incident.
He told the Daily Mail: "My head and my face were scraping the tarmac so it was pretty close. I didn't shut my eyes and think "this is it", although it could have been.
"The weight of the engine was right over my shoulders, there was a quarter of an inch between me and the rest of the car, it was that tight."
The painter and decorator was helped at the scene by a former paramedic trainer, an ex-firefighter and an off-duty police officer who were passing by near Worthing, West Sussex.
He said: "I can't remember what I was thinking at the time other than 'There is a car on top of me'."
A witness said: "It is a miracle the cyclist survived let alone escaped with no broken bones.
"As I approached the car all I could see underneath was a figure dressed in red, and I feared the worst.
"I was relieved that he could speak. It could have been a horrific accident, fortunately Justin got off incredibly lightly."
The driver, a 76-year-old local man, did not require treatment, but Mr Futers was taken to hospital.

Yep, no information on whether it was bad driving or cycling, or indeed both.
A fortunate and happy outcome all things considering.
But another road bike goes to the nice black rolling Tarmac in the sky....RIP

God blessed nobody. He was lucky and others are not. Unless of course 'God' is selective in his blessings ? Perhaps he checks Strava stats first?
All he needed was Geoff Capes to have been walking past to lift the car off him - bit unlucky really.
Age of driver? Don't go there; have you seen some of the young drivers? or middle aged drivers on our roads? Age has nothing to do with bad driving, it appears that the 76, year old had the foresight to stop before he killed the cyclist.
How many young drivers would have stopped in time?

The driver was 76. One assumes that the DVLA will be discussing this with the police...
Why? What has the DVLA got to do with this? Is someone over the age of 75 not allowed to have a driving licence? And why would the Police want to discuss anything with the DVLA.
You're implying that the age of the driver is relevant here and it is not. There are plenty of drivers not aged 76 who are involved in collisions with cyclists. The ability to drive safely, or the lack of it, should determine who has and who does not have a driving licence not the person's age.

Lucky indeed. Let's hope he gets back on a bike soon and doesn't suffer longer term effects of being run over.
My jaw just dropped when I saw who was there to help. The big man upstairs was defiantly looking out for him. Hoping that Justin mends up quickly.
Not only did he not get crushed by the car, but there also happened to be a paramedic, a fireman and a copper passing at the time.
I wonder if he'd accompany me on all my future rides...
Reminds me of when one of my "more elderly" clubmates was shopping with his wife and suffered a heart attack. As he fell to the pavement he was caught by none other than a paramedic, whose colleague was parked in their ambulance just around the corner. That act of providence very likely saved his life.
