Reviving an old thread, as the Garmin 800 performance bundle is £199 on Amazon today.
Just bought one and will stick the 500 on ebay, good upgrade for the price.
This has dropped again in price, not as much as last time, but down from 269 to 234.

Mine came straight away even though I went for free delivery, the 'base map' is a joke considering how much a unit cost. Thanks to http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ we don't have to get ripped off by Garmin.
To be fair some of the "rip off" is due to the Ordnance Survey. But as you say, use Open Maps. In any case the OS 1:50000 is just that, zoom in and it's just bigger, but same content. Open Maps increases detail the further in you go. No contours though but, if you plan rides in advance, that isn't too much of a problem.
Price appears to have gone back up to £264.99 now...
Oh well, good while it lasted.
Hope it helped a few people out.
Bought one!
I noticed that Wiggle were selling the same bundle at £209 but that was an NOH (Newly Overhauled) i.e. a return refurbished. Then I noticed the Amazon deal.
Then comes the mapping question? Easily solved. I used the Open Source mapping from:

Excellent step by step instructions are here if you need them:

You can still get the edge 800 performance bundle for £209 but there's now a wait of 2-4 weeks. Use this link to make sure you're seeing the lowest price http://amzn.to/1dgAei0
It's gone up to £268.11 now.
I can't really afford it.. i have just bought one, i hate you!
Bargain! Ordered one straight away, good spot.
At that price, I was thinking of getting a spare!
