Hopefully this slight
Hopefully this slight ambiguity will be cleared up with the upcoming updates to the highway code. https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/review-of-the-highway-code-t…
Unfortunately, this worthless ‘consultation’ gives only ‘guides’:
─ leave a minimum distance of 1.5 metres at speeds under 30 mph
─ leave a minimum distance of 2.0 metres at speeds over 30 mph
─ for a large vehicle, leave a minimum distance of 2.0 metres in all conditions
These will continue to be ignored, like the present guides are ignored by the police and drivers alike. Remember, there have been no prosecutions for close-passing of cyclists in Lancashire.

Checking against a new chain
Checking against a new chain would presumably work- this tool must show a new one as at least half worn. The trusty Rohloff tool doesn’t even begin to ‘sink’ on a new chain.

I follow hero Graeme Obree’s recommendations which I heard once on some interview- I take a sandwich or some other food, and some water. Of course, most of the time I’m not racing others.

There was a similar event on
There was a similar event on a beach in SE Anglesey about 25 years ago- the car was terminated, by the tide I think. Better still…it was a BMW.
Joy of joys! Google finds loads of these… OK, so it’s a bit off-topic, but stiil fun!

An extreme ‘out there’
An extreme ‘out there’ unbalanced setup. Why not make things better with a simple Carradice QR on the seat post to carry a Camper Longflap? OK, so these are annoying ‘cotton-duck’ instead of proper nylon with click-buckles, but they’re otherwise excellent. Mine is now completely knackered after 16 years, but I’ve had the replacement-in-waiting for a couple of years.

Another measure, if you have
Another measure, if you have a big enough load is a trailer like the Yak Bob- hardly any effect on handling while moving.

Rubber strap seems to be
Rubber strap seems to be holding up well so far, although I expect it will eventually snap
I thought that too!- about the rubber straps on my Aldi lights. But they’re still working well years later so rubber straps don’t have to fail

The police have done their
The police have done their usual ” we may do one of these 4 things” As usual I’ve asked for clarification, and stated that I believe that this is intimidation and not a victimless crime.
- When they won’t tell you, it means they have ‘had a word with the driver’, unless they couldn’t be bothered.
- It is intimidation. It’s just that the police either don’t care, or think you deserve all you get for ‘disrespecting motorists’.
- I had photographic evidence of driver of Transit GU69 UUL stopping on the A6 at the Garstang lights, reversing back towards me, then threatening to ‘sort me out’ for filming people crashing red lights. As usual in Lancashire, no response to online incident report.
- I just had a Cycling Mikey indication- he’s done it again with a 6 month disqualification and a big fine, but the Met makes Lancashire Constabulary look like the hopeless See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil merchants they are.

I would be prepared to accept
I would be prepared to accept a row of really heavy duty steel piles, most of which would be obscured from the house by the fence, if I lived there- at the expense of the nutter driver’s insurance company, and installed at the time of the repairs.

quieter rural roads attract
quieter rural roads attract more motorists
They don’t when they’re single track and a lot of reversing would be involved. I have benefitted from quite a few roads like that in the N Pennines and Lakes in the last few days.

there’s a really sinister
there’s a really sinister human right/sense of entitlement attitude associated with UK driving these days; almost a bit like gun ownership in the USA
I have just returned from 4 days cycle camping in the Lakes and North Pennines in rather hot weather and barmy Bank Holiday traffic. It is my duty to report what actually happened to me and my trailer: no very close passes and a lot of reasonable driving on sometimes crowded roads. I also witnessed a motorcyclist coming off and just missing me as he slid along the road. He was, surprisingly, unharmed but there was a lot of damage to a shiny new bike- it was still rideable. He was riding perfectly sensibly- what fixed him was a trail of diesel which began only 10 yards before he came off. It will have been an agricultural offender- it always is round here.

that’s what I thought but the
that’s what I thought but the ICO disagrees !
The Information Commissioner is like the police- inept and forever trying it on. This was the Commissioner trying to prevent 9 names being revealed at a dodgy health trust (later the subject of several proper inquiries):
“ They do not have a public or political profile or personal responsibility
at a macro level for budgetary, personnel or policy matters; their chief
executives are ultimately accountable for their work; and they therefore
have a reasonable expectation that their privacy should be respected and
their names protected.”The Information Tribunal completely disagreed and forced the disclosure of all 9 names. Recently the Commissioner tried to get away with supporting NHS England in declaring me as ‘vexatious’ so that they wouldn’t have to bother with the information request. That was in the Commissioner’s Decision Notice, but as soon as I fired the 21 gun broadside at the Commissioner at the Information Tribunal, she withdrew her Decision Notice and allegations immediately. I would have no hesitation in going against the Commissioner declaring that the registration number of a vehicle smashing through the wall of a building must be kept secret. She’s a duffer imported from Canada to support the government’s wishes for secrecy,
