I saw someone with 3 of these on a trolley coming out of Aldi this morning, only a few minutes after opening. Everything I’ve had from Aldi has been good for what it is, so don’t write this off! Not interested myself, as I live in a good quiet area for cycling in the hills, and I can generally wait for the rain to stop.

Was the BB threaded or push fit?
Threaded. You would think its impossible, but they did it! Interestingly, I was sent the replacement SRAM BB bearings by mistake, instead of them going to the Planet-X workshop, so I know what they’re like. I declined to send them to the company after the way they behaved, so I still have them, although they’re no use to me- that was a SRAM 11 single, and the Vitus is a 9 double. When I got the bike I easily located the wobble to the non-fixed cup, and at first I thought it was going to be a simple job to sort out myself. However the bearing wasn’t loose and amazingly it was on square and looked normal. I couldn’t shift it and was conscious I was going to have to send it back, so I didn’t want want marks or scratches being blamed on me. It was cosmetically perfect! Even if it had been a push fit (I wouldn’t have bought a bike with push-fit- I’ve never had one, but BB noises can be bad enough even with ‘proper’ kit) I wouldn’t have kept the bike- if someone could make a pig’s ear like that and not notice a crank mega-wobble, goodness knows what other assembly disasters lurked.

I was a horror-story victim!
I was a horror-story victim! About a year ago last May, I ordered my first ever off-the-shelf, off-the-internet bike from Planet-X. It was instantly obvious on arrival that the crank axle was loose. All the ticks were there on the inspection form, but obviously they hadn’t been done. I had quite a lot of trouble getting the money back with lots of ‘your Visa refund is being processed’. Eventually, Visa paid the last £50 itself! The company tried to deduct that because I wouldn’t accept the bike being ‘fixed’ and returned. It transpired that they had installed 2 drive side outboard bearings- on that SRAM set the axle changes calibre and is larger on the drive side- that was why it was wobbling grossly on the non-drive side. Since they installed a wrong-thread bearing, they must have just forced it on with some power driver. No wonder I wouldn’t accept a repair- some poor sucker must have been lumbered with it. I was then very reluctant to get another internet bike, but eventually took the plunge with a Vitus Substance Gravel from Chain Reaction because they had always been very good. It was perfectly prepared and is the best general bike I have ever had. So take heart- yours will probably be fine!September 14, 2020 at 4:07 pm in reply to: Drivers who kill others could receive life sentences under new laws #970625wtjs
I agree with most of those
I agree with most of those below. This is worthless junk, like the Highway Code consultation- the police and CPP simply refuse to take on cases because they’re too busy. Lancashire has begun a policy of not replying at all to online reports of serious offences.

I have been investigating
I have been investigating this question for a few weeks- using Strava and Fitbit, I have so far loosely established that over 1-2 hours of hilly cycling in N Lancashire, a 9 speed triple Merlin titanium with 23 mm tubed tyres, stiff SPD shoes, standard twin caliper brakes is only 5% faster than my 9 speed double Vitus Substance steel framed gravel bike with excellent twin piston TRP Spyre brakes, 38 mm tyres with tubes, bendy SPD shoes

Agreed- hence the oath that must be uttered by those hoping to be admitted to the BMW True Owner’s Club: “Could save 10 seconds on the journey, knock that hospital* down“

Based on the first photo, I would probably use that cycleway unless there were ‘too many’ pedestrians. The question is how many is too many, which I can’t answer as I am unlikely to ever use it- 10 would be too many in that view and I would be stepping on the gas, on the road. Someone below referred to the moron motorists who imagine they have a right to shout rubbish at cyclists out of the window. There are a lot of moron motorists about, so I was shouted at a couple of times recently on the Skipton N Bypass- where the innermost line denotes only the edge of the carriageway and there is no cycle lane at all. Occasionally it’s almost wide enough to be one, but it isn’t. Thickheads are the bane of our lives, or the ending of them!

A free wheel noise or a polite excuse me works very well as you are making a human contact.
Agreed. Or clicking the levers. Doesn’t seem to be a problem round here, but there aren’t very many shared use paths.

A bell is a legal requirement
A bell is a legal requirement in Northern Ireland
I’m happy to believe it, but equally happy to assert that there will be large numbers of cyclists there disobeying this ‘law’, just as we all used to disobey the law which I understand did, or does, prohibit flashing cycle lights or lights not affixed to the bike. The Filth, as we all know, can’t even be bothered to enforce the law against motorists crashing through red lights at 50 mph- so I’ll take my chance over bells and lights.

It’s mostly not a problem up
It’s mostly not a problem up here on the few canalside paths etc- I don’t have a bell, and usually just clacking the levers does the trick. Sometimes I say ‘hello’ and if that doesn’t work they’re probably deaf. For some reason, the pedestrians here don’t seem to be belligerent.

The idea that this is a ban
The idea that this is a ban on pavement parking is false
I’ll take your word for it. These ‘consultations’ are generally rubbish- the recent one on the ‘Highway Code and Cyclists’ for example. Long discussions about whether it’s legitimate for vehicles to stop on the cyclist section at traffic lights when the real question is whether it’s deemed legitimate by the police for drivers to crash through the lights when they turned red ages before- this ‘personalised number plate Range Rover’ was a really gross offender but was protected by Lancashire Constabulary- reported the day after the incident and the only response from LC was to wait for weeks then declare: ‘it is now too late to process’

You would hope people could
You would hope people could make the connection and realise that we can’t all just keep driving everywhere
Unfortunately not- they will just keep driving their gas-guzzlers until the rising sea levels come up over the wheels. The climate emergency, when it arrives probably with some sudden deterioration that we weren’t expecting, will make the Covid emergency look like the Good Old Days. I saw almost no cycles today on the Trough of Bowland road, but at least 20 to 30 times as many energy-guzzlers- they mostly just stop and sit in their cars scoffing and drinking to get over their exertions.

mine is a Sora rather than Tiagra groupset. Mine came with a 11-32 cassette and a FSA Omega sub-compact 32/48 chainset.
This is a great setup- 9 speed is ideal for people without infinite amounts of money. I spent a long time working all this out until I got a Vitus steel gravel bike in last November’s sales and it’s the best all rounder I’ve ever had. These FSA sets are using 120/90 BCD rings and the bike came with 48/32 as above, and 11-32 cassette. I really wanted 46/30 and 11-34 to tow my trailer up big hills for camping trips, and that’s what I’ll get when these wear out! I was worried that there would be no 120/90 rings because Shimano has moved to 110/80, so I bought some for future proofing

There aren’t that many
There aren’t that many cyclists up here in N Lancashire, so it’s feasible to raise a hand (or whatever) to them-I admit to feeling a little disappointed if they don’t ‘reply’, when I have done my duty and initiated the contact. We all share a kinship- we’re all subject to the same police approved psycho-driving!
