Finally somone else posted about the idea of a team squad of say 10-12 for purist races, and you could then select from that for individual stages. My trouble with the purist comps is that once picked, I then completely forget about them – not good surely. Again, not sure if practical – the behind the scenes work must be managed by someone.

I’m not against this method of gameplay in principle. but for me it’d have to replace what we have. so instead of having a standard and a purist, just run some kind of squad system with transfers. it’s too close to the standard game to really work as something that runs concurrently.

i’m genuinely interested in what people think about this as an alternative. i’ve long been of the opinion that running purist and standard competitions for everything is a bit pointless, and purist doesn’t give you much reason to interact with a comp once it’s closed. this approach has a bit of both.

I think the squad size would need to be bigger relative to the team size though. so a scenario:

    1) you pick a squad before the competition starts. it’s a squad of, say, 20 riders. there’s a budget constraint, like there is now.

    2) when the competition begins you can’t make any more changes to your squad.

    3) you can select a team for each stage from your squad. any 8 riders from the 20. so for the big summit finishes you can load it up with climbers and sprinters for the flats. but only the riders you picked, so if someone a bit unknown starts doing well you can’t sub him in if you didn’t already have him.

    4) transfers? could be limited, or unlimited. you could conceivably pick your teams several stages in advance if it was unlimited.

I wouldn’t want to lose Standard as is.

I agree with much that has

I agree with much that has been written, but I would rather we didn’t push the game towards closure.  I don’t actually think there is much needed to fix the running of the game and I have really enjoyed it and would miss it.  It is still the best value £10 I have spent this year.

We should recognise a couple of things.  There were more than 2,700 teams entered in the TdF standard competion.  I recognise that most of those don’t play all the competions, but that is still a lot of interest for a game that has not been heavily promoted this year.  It won’t be a major revenue stream in itself for Road cc, but it does draw me (and I suspect others) to the site more when there is a competion running though.

To keep most people happy we need only a couple of things.

    • Scheduled games are run and open on time.  Which race is probably less important than delivering the ones advertised.
    • More cover to update scores.  Burden falls on very few people and if they are volunteers they may get too much flak when it goes wrong.

I am not too bothered about prizes.  I recognise the revenues won’t run to much.  I pay my £10 for the entertainment of competing not to win stuff.  Don’t get me wrong, I like the chance of winning free stuff as much as the next player, but that doesn’t drive my participation.

So I suppose my hope is that next year we have a little more energy in supporting an excellent game rather than we encourage the owners to give up on it as it provides more bad press than positive traffic to the site.

    Added Talansky and

Added Talansky and Castroviejo for two sprinters for this stage.  Suspect most of the guys are gubbed and unless they think they can win or are riding for GC they won’t destroy themselves over 37km.  GC heavy might be good.

Only three transfers left, but that should be OK.  Castroviejo goes for tomorrow and the last two transfers will give me three sprinters for Madrid.

    I have Drucker, Meersman and

I have Drucker, Meersman and Arndt for today, plus the usual jersey points.

5 transfer left for the three stages to come.  Where is the best bang for your buck, ITT, Summit or the stage to Madrid?

    Don’t have Yates any more.

Don’t have Yates any more.  You have me worried now!

Got 4 of the riders you ask the question of though.

Think Fraile might be a couple of points short on today’s scoring. Scored as 4. 2nd in KoM overall and first over the first climb today.

PS Thanks for doing the scoring.  Really enjoying the Vuelta.

I decided to go for three

I decided to go for three sprinters.  You chose better than me.  Went Drucker, Meersman and Cort.  Last one didn’t work out well.

Not managed to focus sufficiently on ToB and I am not getting much out of that at the moment.

I did bring Meersman in, but

I did bring Meersman in, but that looks a waste now.  My team doesn’t need too much of an overhaul for tomorrow with 3 GC and 2 KOM contenders in it today.

    Interesting only four riders

Interesting only four riders cross over in our teams today.

Fraile, Geniez, Valverde and LL Sanchez

Sitting with 19 transfers now after just two changes today.  Left in GC riders for the ‘guaranteed’ points as breakaways are hard to predict on a stage like this.

Don’t think I will have a big day, but hoping not to have a shocker either.

I went Frank and Gesink for Meersman and Hermans.  Didn’t get any return on those transfers.

1,2,3,4 on the stage, but I suspect many will have the podium.

    Dropped Chaves for Quintana.

Dropped Chaves for Quintana.   Lost faith in Dombrowski and he has gone for me.  Been struggling with the De Gendt cost too.  It has to be a GC battle today, doesn’t it?

I was pleased that I correctly backed the breakaway option with my team.  Less pleased that I didn’t identify any riders that were actually in the breakaway.

I thought I might be in the minority making no transfers, but maybe it was the common approach.  Only making one for tomorrow too.
