    The only time I’ve lost
The only time I’ve lost weight from exercise whilst eating whatever I wanted was during military basic training…and that was a stupid amount of running about! Outside of that diet changes are the only thing that makes a difference unless your exercise regime resembles something Royal Marine like. Got picked up for high cholesterol s few years ago and had to go ‘cold turkey’ on sat fats for 3 mths to see what effect it had. Small drop in cholesterol but I lost a stone in a month. Some of the foods I cut out (eg cheese) I manage to generally avoid so my weight went up a bit, but not back to the original level.

    Puncture resistance usually
Puncture resistance usually comes at a price, although Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres (25s) are in the Wiggle sale at 23 quid each; not bad. Bit heavy and hard to put on but absolutely bomb proof! They just want to be ridden through broken glass.

Thought I’d add to this topic
Thought I’d add to this topic I started. Having had some luck getting a new job prior to heading to NZ, I threw caution to the wind and bought a GoPro 4 Silver. First impressions; great build standard and the video is really sharp. After mastering the menu etc I tried linking it to my IPhone (via Bluetooth/WiFi). Worked OK but when you turned it off and tried to ‘reconnect’, I just couldn’t get it to work, so for the sake of batteries and sanity I just forgot about the app. Fearing going nuts on attachment options, I just bought a vented helmet mount and (bike attachment not available in the shop – Jessops, who do money off any extras you buy with the camera) a roll-bar fitting. I also bought an extra battery (good tip). Mounting on a helmet; yes you look a bit odd! The extra weight on your helmet is a bit annoying, especially if you mount it towards the front of the helmet. You also have to remember if the camera is off or on when you want to film. You can at least look about to vary the shot a bit. What’s slightly worrying is that it’s locked on solid, so if you came off onto the helmet it might affect the way the helmet protects you (as in the Schumacher debate). Tried it on the handlebars with the roll-bar mount, which turned out to be quite useful as it’s slightly bigger than the bike specific mount and is consequently more versatile. You don’t have to shell out on GoPro badged mounts as there are plenty of good, cheaper versions on-line. I thought mounting on the handlebars would introduce a lot of shake, but not really the case and the camera is easy to operate. Anyway, the videos. Anyone can take a reasonable photo these days; equally so with videos, but I think it’s how you edit them into an entertaining movie that makes the difference. I’ve got loads of clips of us riding along through various terrain; the challenge now is to add in photos, music, captions etc to make a movie. GoPros? They’re quality bits of kit that are totally at home in an outdoor environment, but don’t be ‘sold’ by the advertising clips as it’s down to your imagination with filming and editing skills that will make the difference. Oh yes, Alps 2 Ocean ride in NZ (supported – i.e. someone shifts your luggage); 266 Km of great fun and you don’t have to be mega fit. All manner of terrain, so choice of bike is difficult. Probably another post in itself!

They look pretty good and it’s crossed my mind to put one on my commuter, purely because it’s weatherproof. I currently have a B17 Imperial (v comfy) but I have to remember to stick the cover on when rains. I keep it topped up with proofide but try not to give it a rain soaking if possible.

I had a new SRAM chain and the Powerlink ‘exploded’ as I was going uphill. Got a new Powerlink and I think that chain is still on the bike.

I only have 2 bits of Rapha clothing; a lighweight jersey and a city rain jacket. Both are excellent; fit, performance, quality, style etc. Rapha do a seriously good sale with big price reductions.

    I’ve learn’t how to change
I’ve learn’t how to change chains, cassettes and middle chain rings, and have adopted the ‘change the chain at 0.75’ approach. The other thing I do is always give my chain a clean if it gets a good soaking (normally it’s the commuter bike). I have my GT85, lube and cloths near the bikes so it’s a quick job after a ride. I’m getting a lot more miles out of a chain than I used to. Unless it’s properly wet I’ve never been a fan of wet lube as it attracts the muck; I’m using juice lube dry/moist which seems to be doing well in the winter commuting conditions. Won’t outlast a soaking but then I clean and re-lube anyway.

I had a similar issue cycling
I had a similar issue cycling in France where I was meeting the rest of the family for lunch mid-ride in a town. Usually I carry a thin ‘cafe lock’ but I managed to carry a Abus Mini U lock by sticking the barrel in my seat pack and strapping the shackle between the seat pack and the saddle. The seat pack was a strap variety, rather than a clip-on type. OK, it was extra weight but better than losing the bike. The U lock went through the seat stay/rear spokes and the bike stand with the cafe lock securing the front wheel.

    Commiserations. I came off
Commiserations. I came off this winter and last winter as well; got away with scrapes and bruises. I just stick to my winter hybrid/tourer until the spring arrives. 32 tyres at 80psi, mudguards, nothing sexy about it, but it’s better than nothing.

I had a terrible slipped disc
I had a terrible slipped disc episode in my early 30s. 6mths off work in 2 years, mind blowing pain killers 😀 (had ‘cold turkey’ coming off Diazepam 4 times a day!), couldn’t even sit in a car etc etc. Cycling for me at the time was mainly commuting and a bit of pub rides. In desperation I went to a Chiropractor who sorted me out. I still go 3-4 times a year. Doesn’t necessarily work for everyone but it sorted me out.

Is this on road or, at worse,
Is this on road or, at worse, ‘light’ trails. I just did a CTC tour and was joined by someone I know who does some ‘eye-popping’ cycle touring (fully loaded up). She was on a Surly Long Haul Trucker with ‘fat’ Schwalbe Marathons (not MTB grip but there are a number of options in the Schwalbe range). She just spent the summer cycling with someone who was on a round the world trip. He needed a new tyre so she brought one out for him…Schwalbe again. I use Schwalbe Marathon Pluses on a commuting bike and they’re ‘WMD proof’.
