The LBS workshop was pretty quiet and they offered me a (free) follow-up visit to check on all the upgrades they fitted. While the bike was in I got some Ergon grips fitted, which, initially, feel a bit ‘odd’ but your hands are really well supported. The LBS view on any aches and pains were to give yourself some time to get used to the changes.

The LBS said they kept the bar height pretty close but I can’t verify that. The old set up was a pretty odd adjustable system so I’m sure they did their best. The grips are the originals, but I have spotted some better ergo/padded ones around. Could be a cheap upgrade; even if it didn’t solve the neck pain, they’d be more comfortable.

Good point. I do see a Chiro 3-4 times a year for some ‘maintenance’ following a slipped disc 18 years ago. He always finds something to ‘adjust’, but then he needs to justify his £42 and keep me coming back. He might find something next time I’m there. I’ve had a road bike since May which doesn’t give me any problems; mind you it’s steel so supposedly has a bit of ‘spring’ in it.

There’s a woman who I occasionally encounter on my short commute. Normal work clothes and no helmet, she has a complete disregard for any lights, normally ‘hitting’ the junctions at speed with some pretty hairy manoeuvres. I thought she couldn’t get any more reckless but this morning (dark) she had no lights and nothing was off limits; wrong side of the road, gaps through moving cars, pedestrian crossings, the pavement. She even tackled one set of lights like this in front of a police car which did nothing (wouldn’t have let it go in London). Makes me cross as it must really wind up motorists and pedestrians, but I just tell myself to forget it.

I can’t be bothered to say anything. Mind you I do have an annoying bus/taxi gate system to get through, which takes ages if you wait for the lights. In the mornings, when it’s quiet, I trundle slowly down the pavement and either wait or walk through later when they’re more pedestrians around. So I’m not a ‘saint’ but think completely ignoring red lights just winds up the motorists.

I’m a bit of a Brooks fan, but they’re heavy if you’re worried about weight and pricey. I have an Imperial on a hybrid/commuter and a Swift on a road bike. I’d wear cycle shorts for a long ride, but they really do work and you don’t get an aching backside which I used to get with other saddles. The also look ‘the business’. My mountain bike has a dreadful saddle which I need to replace. I can barely sit down following a day’s biking. The Specialised saddle fitting service looked good as a Brooks leather saddle probably wouldn’t fare too well on an MTB.

Anyone over a certain age has to get sentimental about Raleigh. I had a Rudge (Xmas upgrade was a Sturmey Archer 3sp!), Banana Racer and a Pioneer Trail over the years.
I currently have a Genesis Equilibrium 20 in copper which I’ve added a Brooks Swift saddle to; looks great, but then I think you should have a ‘relationship’ with your bike ;-).
My wife’s just about to get a road bike and we were in a Specialised shop and it was all about carbon and frame features etc. I felt like we were buying golf clubs or skis which you trade in after a couple of years. Spotted the new Genesis Equilibrium Disc the other day and felt those ‘yearning’ feelings again. As I was walking out of the shop with the Genesis I was asked, “What’s its name?”. Thinking fast, I’d recently pulled up the Genesis website to show my Mum a picture and she said, not having her glasses on, “it’s called Dennis!?”. So that’s its name.
