Recommendations for cheap, grippy 25c tyres please

    Pretty peed off at yet another expensive tyre ruined in the Leeds Glass Disposal Lanes (or bike lanes if you prefer) in and around Headingley. The Otley Road Run – you’ll know what it is if you’re a student in Leeds – has a lot to answer for.

    So, anyone have any recommendations for cheap, grippy 25c tyres for my commute? It’s that or I just stop commuting – or retire. Now there’s a thought…..

    Run Durano Plus’s too but reluctant to sacrifice them also. Have been considering the Bontrager Hardcase and as I can get a good deal on ’em at my LBS might go in and have a look.

    For puncture resistance you can’t beat Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase. Roll surprisingly well for something so tough. Go for 28mm if they fit your frame. Review:

    I have marathons on my
    I have marathons on my commuter, duranos on my winter road bike, and ones on my madone. The marathons are bombproof but they make climbing too painful due to their heavy weight. The duranos solve that as they’re a lot lighter, and bombproof too. The ones tick all boxes, but they’re not cheap. However, they’re a joy to ride. On a side note, after I installed the duranos on my winter bike I’ve been doing all my commutes on it.

    Planet X guttersnipe. 25c, got a pair last year for around £24 delivered. 8 mile commute and no punctures yet, pretty hardwearing and grippy too imho

    I’ve been using Vittoria
    I’ve been using Vittoria Rubino Pro Tech 25s since last year. Pretty grippy *especially* in the wet, wear reasonable, very comfortable (150tpi), and the fairy has not visited once yet.

    Ahh, so it’s not just me who’s had problems with Marathon Plus’s! I’ve had two split when small stones have become caught in the tread. They were my first choice for commuting into Leeds before having that problem.

    Thanks all. Might give the Armadillo’s a try.

    I’ve had problems with
    I’ve had problems with marathon pluses – Two punctures as a result of large pieces of flint trapped in the sipes that moved through the puncture belt. As the tyres have become worn I have had less problems! I also wouldn’t define them as “grippy” I’ve had a few wobbles in “greasy” conditions and one fall which was probably due partly to my incompetence but the tyres didn’t help. I’ve got specialized armadillos on my other commuting bike which has been ridden a similar amount on the same route and had no punctures with them and less issues in poor conditions.

    Another vote for marathon
    Another vote for marathon plus. you probably won’t puncture in them so the money you save on inner tubes and inconveniences racks up majorly over time. recommended (and use zip ties to get them on if you have troubles)

    And yes, Wiggle look cheapest currently along with CRC.

    Puncture resistance usually comes at a price, although Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres (25s) are in the Wiggle sale at 23 quid each; not bad. Bit heavy and hard to put on but absolutely bomb proof! They just want to be ridden through broken glass.
