It was only £20 love, honest

Really interested to know what new and devious ways I can convince my wife cycling is a cheap hobby.

Obviously I already have the Black-ops bank account for major purchases; wheels, frames and groupsets, then the excuses like ‘oh that, no that’s the old Garmin/bibs/glasses’ and of course the tried and tested ‘no, those are the wheels from that old bike – unfortunately they are not compatible with this bike so I’m going to get them rebuilt’ lines.

With the combined road.cc experiences spanning thousands of years I’d love to hear how you manage to pull the wool over your wife/husband/partner’s eyes.

Don’t worry you can always set up a new account if you are worried about this getting back.

I earn my wages so don’t feel I should have to explain to her what I buy. That said she isn’t bothered, as long as the bills are paid and kids are OK she is happy. But god forbid if I leave the house untidy.

Let’s just say that the discounts at the Rapha sample sales were great, but not *that* great….

I have also ended up with bits I don’t use and have ended up on eBay. Whatever sits in my PayPal account is ‘invisible’…

+1 for the above after falling foul of the swapping red bike for red bike as joemmo reports, except in my case it was Ducatis.

Oh yes, forgot the delivery to the work address!

Once I had to run round the side of the house to catch the postie before he knocked on the front door!

I live away from home Monday to Friday, rideing mostly in the evenings (plus Sunday mornings of course). SWMBO doesn’t happen to have the login details for the joint Credit card account and all my on line purchases are delivered to the midweek address or the office, by the time they appear at the weekend they already look used, have marks etc.

Tell them you got it off
Tell them you got it off Bob/Bill/Frank as it didn’t fit/been upgraded/spare and you have paid £20 rather than/borrowed it.

Tell SWMBO you charged cash rather than a few pints or bartered your services for parts etc.

Sweet – I like the idea of that one.
I have ‘mysteriously’ swapped 105 chainsets for Dura Ace with @club mates’ because we both needed something slightly different.

    Strategic disclosure is the
Strategic disclosure is the key (otherwise known as mis-direction). So you discuss how you are saving up for a new Garmin but forget to mention the new carbon fibre bars it’s going to be mounted on. Or mention that you’re going to have to get a new Dura Ace spoke magnet because it pinged across the garage and got lost but forget to mention that it came with a pair of Dura Ace wheels, etc.

Personally while initially all part of the challenge/fun in the end the stress and guilt got too much and now I come clean.

It was after the upgrade programme was complete, but that was just a coincidence B-)

A friend of mine had a red bike and wanted a new frame so bought a new frame also in red in the hope that his wife would not notice. It wasn’t the same shade of red but he doubted his wife paid that much attention to what was in the garage anyway. Naturally the first time the newly framed bike was rolled out to no fanfare at all his wife said “what’s that? I’ve never seen that one before”

“Bollocks” I’m speculating is what he must have thought at the time that happened.

Schoolboy error – there’s a reason black bikes and kit are referred to as ‘stealth’. I learned that one a long time ago.
