Obviously they need to have somewhere to put their shopping bags while they open the boot. Do you want local businesses to die – do you?

Probably not, because even if they did, hardly anyone will have noticed.

Big caveats around the likely quality of the studies (a lot of self-reported data here for a start), but both suggest not much difference between those riding bikes and those driving motor vehicles

    My statistical nerves are

My statistical nerves are twitching at that ‘Most cyclists are angels’ section. Just because in 84% of observations the signals were observed, doesn’t mean that you can conclude that 84%, or even the majority, of cyclists don’t ride through red lights. That would only be true if every individual had to either always go through them or always stop. If a different 16% went through each red light, then by the time they reached the third set about half of them would have done it.

On that evidence, I think his liscensce should be confiscated indefinitely, as he’s clearly demonstrated that he has no idea of what an acceptable standard of driving is, and therefore isn’t a fit person to be in charge of a motor vehicle.

    The frustration isn’t really

The frustration isn’t really so much the actions of the pedestrians. It’s the having to use a shared path and deal with those actions. The actions just happen to be the point at which that frustration materialises.

That’s on a road, though. Shared space is rule 13, and it’s pretty silent on where you should be, other than that you should ‘take care not to obstruct or endanger [cyclists].’

It’s both. The narrative shapes the truth, and the truth reinforces the narrative. It’s a vicious circle. So you have two options: give up and accept that it’ll always be like that, or try to do something differently.

Forget all this homely ‘why can’t we all just get along’ bollocks

Except no-one here is saying that. What they’re saying is that if we want things to change we have to think (and cause others to think) differently about the situation. Otherwise we’re just perpetuating the same old anti-patterns.

Far from ‘just getting along’, the suggestion is to challenge people’s thinking by using language that subverts the comfortable norm.
