It was only when the government lowered the wage requirements from £30K when describing what was a “skilled” worker (when considering applicants for immigration) that I could finally consider myself as “skilled” even with a relavent degree and over 20 years of lab bench experience.

I think I may spend quite some time on News Thump, just the headlines are very well written and very funny.

I changed the oil on my Rohloff for the first time, on 1st March, going to try and remember the date.  It was surprisingly easy.

After a bit of reading I discovered that I’m meant to clean and regrease the external gearbox after 500 km (maybe miles) which is a bit shorter than I might desire.  Not a difficult task mind, but annoyingly more than the fit and generally forget system I thought I was buying.

A couple of weeks back I got quite a few for Respro sprots masks, which I very much doubt contribute much to viral protection.  One thing I have seen is that when people are wearing masks they tend to touch the mask a great deal around the nose, thus negating the point of the mask completely.

Get out and enjoy the start

Get out and enjoy the start of spring while you can.  It is now drier than it’s been for months.

I got out to Swinley yesterday, before shutdown of non essential travel start to be enforced.

We’ve never really done totalitarianism here, maybe we will never accept banning of solo riding or walking, but you never know…

    Great that cycling in general

Great that cycling in general has gone up, public transport can be a spreader.

But aren’t the handlebar grips on the City Bikes as likely to transmit the virus as lift buttons, handrails on escalators and grab-handles on tube trains.

    The warmer months may bring

The warmer months may bring some relief for the northern hemisphere, and the sport of cycling does require world wide travel, as it would seem does the rest of commerce at least.  Who knows how long borders will be closed and when it’s summer here it is of course winter in the southern hemisphere.

One thing that could even put a dent in the hope that hotter weather could provide a slowing down in transmission is that MERS, which is a fellow coronovirus, which is much more deadly and seems generally confined to the hotter parts of the Middle East.

As I said in my little tale,

As I said in my little tale, it wasn’t for me.  Cranks would not turn, forwards or backwards.  Total jam and lock up.  And it really wasn’t easy to get the back wheel out.  Cross-chaining is bad, but this was awful.

Even with a new correctly lengthened chain, when travelling through this particular car park, I would always check that I had gone into the middle on the front.  It was that bad and scary.

Even coming down a big downhill, it was not a bad thing to slow down a bit, train station car park at the end of evening rush hour is a risky place for a cyclist, even with big lights and lots of Hi Viz.

I got The Knowledge out from

I got The Knowledge out from my local library, it was alright.

I would recommend libraries, I was getting a few books out of the main Reading library, I think with the ones I had already had taken out I got up to eleven, I expected the machine to say TOO MANY!, it never happened, apparently I can take out twenty.  That’s a lot of reading and knowledge (I tend to do non-fiction).  Berkshire do 3 weeks, which I have never managed to get my head around (it was definiitely 4 in Hampshire and in Birmingham, I think) but they will email you when almost due (mostly).  You just pick up what might be interesting, give it a go and if not, very little worry and cost.  And providing no one has put a hold/order on a book, you can renew up to 5 times.

I did do one about Spanish Flu a couple of monts ago, personal experiences and some general stuff.

Pandemic 1918 : the story of the deadliest influenza in history.

    Catharine Arnold

And several years back I read

Spillover : animal infections and the next human pandemic

    David Quammen

Which was very interesting and not quite as sensasionalist as The Hot Zone.

Is there anything that man can touch that doesn’t turn to poop.

Even the readers of the New York Times know of him as Failing Grayling.
