    My Shimano freehubs always

My Shimano freehubs always died by becoming part time fixed drive, no or very draggy ratchet.

I have met people whose hubs have died by proving no drive, which if you are pushing hard could, say pulling away from stopping at traffic lights it could be very nasty, as Podc says, get it looked at, you have at least been given a warning.

You may have less worries about a little bit more torque with both being ali rather than carbon.

    Why not, I’ve had

Why not, I’ve had “discussions” with a cancer medic about why driving whilst tired could possibly be dangerous, the same medic needing “proof” that using a mobile at the wheel was extreemly hazardous and refusing to look at it when found, and I’ve seen nurses in uniform staring at smart phones when in motion in their cars.

Driving does something to people.  It can turn wonderful people whose interest is saving lives into monsters who take them.

Perhaps it’s just me on my

Perhaps it’s just me on my big  ol mountain bike and tending to the baggier side of clothing, but I seem to be getting only the ignorant and idiotic close passes rather than the obvious punishments.  Mainly sticking to the now very dry bridleways and byways, with really quite a lot of cooperation on the little roads.  Big roads I’m still encountering a bit of impatience.

So far it seems more freindly than say school holiday commute time, where the emptier roads seem to encourage more impatience, but I do fear as it continues, both the volume of motor traffic will increase (I see from some stats it already has) and some of the niceness will disappear.

I have retired her now, and

I have retired her now, and am currently mothballing her, but befere I got my new bike (The Ultimate Commuter) replacing the cassette on my Getting to Work Bike was becoming a bit too expensive, as I could not put anything less than shimano’s CS M737 on her, 8 speed, even though she was only 7 speed on the back, (but trying to get a 7 speed hub), back in the day less than £30, now NOS around £110, and that’s with international postage having to be added.  I think the last one I found was £90, to be kept just in case.

Oh and finding quality 26 inch rim brake rims, once Mavic stopped making their wonderful XC717s.

These are consumable products, which I would not wish to chance buying 2nd hand, unlike a derailleur, and so as their quantity declines, their price increases.

The last 9 speed XTR cassette I got was £150, apparently (hopefully) fitted and never ridden.  But that’s my good bike, and even though it was never the intention the new bike is more capable off road then the good Ti XC bike, though much heavier.  So might last some time.

The “UC” was Rohloffed, in a hope to stop the cycle of redundancy, with the rear cog costing £19, and no options in quality or flashness.

    Fine point, bridleways are

Fine point, bridleways are rideable, by horse or bicycle.  They make up most of my off road routes, and restrictive byways.  Southern Chilterns mainly.

And roads of course apart from motorways.  Are there many motorways crossing the new forest?

They seem to hate cyclists in the New Forest.  It’s the speeding motorists who kill and injure all the ponies.

Hermes are a bit dodgy, they

Hermes are a bit dodgy, they all are really, I’ve had some bad things with DPD too.  And Fed Ex and DHL have been drageed down by them.  I never liked complaining, the drivers are given enough of a terrible time already, too many packages and not enough time, I just live with a bit of frustration and get the stuff eventually.  Being told there is no one in when there were 2 people in at all times, even got sent a picture of the flats from the drivers seat of the obviously parked van once too.

For all of their faults Royal Mail are always predictable, if we were ever to get the option I would pick them, but you never get the choice, just the sinking of the heart when you get the first email or text.

I’m going to try and not

I’m going to try and not insult Bechdan’s knowledge and experience, but whenever I have had a botttom bracket go, it REALLY sounds as it has GONE.  Grindy, awful noises, really nasty, and as I remember very little warning, silent one day then bam, graunchy, a click could be anything on the bike, everything wrong with my bike sounds like it’s coming from the bottom bracket area.  First thing I do is re-grease my seatpost.  Then slowly start pulling bits apart, cleaning and greasing as I go, starting with the cranks, pedals, maybe bb threads.

The last click that developed went away by itself, yea…

Kind of good as I was still waiting to buy the new bb adaptor thing I discovered I needed.

I have never had a problem

I have never had a problem with my XTR ones, the last on was only £30, so not particularly pricey.  Seems to be about £40 now.  Was just on the good bike (Ti MTB) so not huge mileage, but hard.  Now on the new Ultimate Commuter, almost a year old, no commute yet, but ridden every day, mostly off road through in some awful conditions since late August/September.

My shimano square tapers all lasted soo very long, many, many years.  And when they died you knew it, horrible noises, but it was so awful that I never got to seizing up.
