I ran a seven speed system on

I ran a seven speed system on an eight speed casette, mainly because the XT STI levers operated my cantilevers and you could not get quality seven speed casettes, or at least eight speed were easier, but I used the smaller seven cogs, my commute changed and because of one particular off road hill (Crown Prince Hill in Ash Ranges) I sometimes needed better gearing, so I shifted the derilleur to use the bigger seven cogs.  I was still using the same chain, with the length optimised for the earlier set up.  It all still worked well, until I desended a big hill on the big ring, got to a car park, dropped a couple of gears, and then came to a stop at  a road junction, went down a few more.  Terrible, I know, but I went big big and the whole drivetrain jammed, it was not easy getting the chain onto a gear so that it would work, frustrating, had to whack the rear wheel out.

If you keep the chain, DO NOT go big big.

There is only one scene of bicycle fighting, but it’s worth watching the whole movie, Jackie Chan’s “Project A”

In fact, just watch his whole back catalogue, the Hong Kong stuff though, the US and Canadian films are bit of an aquired taste.

    If it’s your commuter, bits

If it’s your commuter, bits will die, upgrade as you need to.

My “Ultimate Commuter” is now better (well pricier) than my “Good Bike”, it’s a major part of my riding, often the majority.

I think I heard that road and mountain bike shifters and derilleurs had different amount of pull, so that the newer ones were not that compatible.

Various people on here have had good things to say about the Wolftooth extender.

    I don’t think you need a

I don’t think you need a narrow wide chainring, I understand they help keep the chain on a 1x with rear derailier, no front shifter to get the chain back on.  With a single speed there should not be too much slack in the system to allow the chain to come off.

My middleburn Rohloff specific chainset didn’t come with their thick thin chainring.  I have never thrown a chain, but then it’s been slightly less than a year, and I have internal hub gears and a ratchet.

I run an X1, good chain, but I think that the 1/8 might be a bit stronger, both cog and chain, as the braking force sometimes needs to be transferred as well a drive too.

Just my ponderings, I could be completely wrong.

The huge oil companies make a

The huge oil companies make a lot, but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of profit to be made in flogging the petrol at petrol stations.  I think they make a lot more from the convenience items they sell alonside the fuel.

Roads get huge amounts spent on them by government and local authorities.

Fuel is also sold to train companies and airlines, neither of which seem that profitable.  Flybe for example.

I’m guessing that it’s the bulk extracting, refining and transport of fuel that makes the real money.

There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of profit to be made in any method of getting people to work.

Most methods appear to require subsidies of some sort.

At some point the various media organisations might figure out that cycling isn’t so bad, especially as a means of moving large volumes of people, especially for the commute.

Either that or start making the races so long that the cyclist might start haveing difficulties in winning.

    Lack of spokeholes could be

Lack of spokeholes could be one of those things, but mine has holes, so needs tape.  Makes it far easier to build a wheel, do most people use a bit of tape anyway?

A deeper well in the middle?  So as to allow easier mounting with the necessarily tighter beads?

    Just speculating.

Ta mate, I’m no expert, only

Ta mate, I’m no expert, only fitted my first set of tubeless a week ago, but you pick these things up.

If you go back to tubes, douse the tube and the inside of the tyre with talc, it’s meant to reduce rolling resistance, but it also takes away the stickyness of the rubber on the bead, making getting the bead over the rim easier.  Messy as hell, but it works.
