I have the garmin 810, using openstreet maps. Most of the time its fine, but I do find it infuriating at times. Once it just switched off mid-ride (seemed okay once I switched back on but half my ride’s data was gone), and recently the connection to my phone just stopped working and it won’t reconnect now no matter what I try. The heart rate monitor that came with it is temperamental at best – I need to have cycled about 5 miles before it connects and when I wear certain clothes like a big winter jacket it doesn’t connect at all. I’m looking to get a polar heart rate unit and connect it to the device instead. The garmin connect app for tracking your data is a joke, but you can just upload your rides to strava anyway so that’s not really an issue.
Like I say, most of the time its fine, but I’ve made my mind up that when it needs replacing i will try something else like the Mio.

Yeah, i broke my hand a
Yeah, i broke my hand a couple of weeks ago. Have a fibreglass cast till the end of Feb which they said don’t get wet, but they didn’t say anything about sweat so I took that to mean its okay to continue training. I’m going to the canaries for some cycling in late March and don’t want to be an unfit blob starting from scratch. So I started going to the gym this week – just easing back into it on the cycling machines – they’re quite good because I can do it sitting up without putting any weight on my hands. I don’t have a turbo trainer but I think that would be much more difficult/uncomfortable to sit up on.
So far so good, will be upping the intensity gradually.

They don’t list De Rosa but I know they used to stock them! Thanks, yeah – they do sell them (although they’re out of stock just at the moment but can get them in). And they’ll do a proper bike fitting as well which is one of the reasons I wanted to get it from a proper shop. I’ll pay them a visit – cheers!

Contested Will wrote:I went for the Ultegra disc version. It looks bloody gorgeous, really lovely frame with all internal cables and brake lines. Its not lightweight with the discs, but they just work so well. Not had much of a chance to ride it seriously yet, but planning to hit Holme Moss this weekend for a proper workout. Definitely well pleased with it as a step up from my alu Trek. That’s the one I’ve got my eye on! I just can’t go back to rim brakes after trying discs. Please let me know how you feel about it after a decent ride – so hard to find reviews about it.

I haven’t heard of them before, the prices are better than the usual outlets too. Might give them a call.

If you have a decent new
If you have a decent new bike, you can guarantee at some stage it will be nicked if you leave it unattended in London.Mine was only a Specialized that I got 2nd hand but it was under 2 years old. I used to leave at Victoria Station, chained up with 2 d-locks. It was right outside a office with a security guard sitting there in a reception area looking through the glass directly at the bikes. I still can’t believe it but someone in broad daylight, in the middle of summer, in a very busy area cut through the locks of the 6 or 7 bikes there and took them all. My theory is they dressed up as an official from the council or something like that. Wankers.

I was expecting them to
I was expecting them to absolutely slate cyclists, but I was pleasantly surprised. They were quite funny and didn’t insult the cyclist anymore than they normally insult each other’s vehicle choices. The bits where the cars were pulling out in front of Hammond will hopefully have had some sort of eye-opening effect on the motorists watching.
All good fun anyway.

First of all he does refer to himself in the third person. Re-watch the interview, you must have missed it.As for calling him a psychopath what I actually said was that he is fairly high on that spectrum (a spectrum that we are all on) but I’m not suggesting he’s Hannibal Lector.
As for not appreciating how he affected others, well…15 years of trashing other peoples reputations, 2 years of glib apologies and confessions and only when it became necessary. No wonder people think he’s dissembling, calculating and untrustworthy.
On the plus side I bet he’s never drowned one kitten.
I admit I’m kind of a fan boy of his once more, but not so much that I’d watch it again. If you say he referred to himself in the third person, I’ll believe you – but it must have only been once or twice out of the hundreds of times he referred to himself in the first person.
I’m actually beginning to feel sorry for the bloke. It appears that literally whatever he says is ‘wrong’. It must be exasperating for him.

As for agreeing to the interview in the first place, that can be summed up thus; “notice me! notice me!
Yawn, the old ‘he’s a psychopath because he refers to himself in the third person etc’ is an opinion that’s been popular for a while now. I’ve heard it regurgitated so many times that it’s just meaningless. I didn’t hear him refer to himself in the 3rd person once. The other stuff is just populist conjecture – for example, how can anyone say he doesn’t appreciate how his actions have affected others? I think the exact opposite is true and I think it’s patently obvious.

I thought he came across really well actually. My attitude to him has definitely mellowed out over the last few months. The new BBC documentary about him is broadcast on Thursday, really looking forward to it.

I have two broken bones
I have two broken bones including a spiral fracture on one metacarpal and to be honest I’m quite suprised that they didn’t put a cast on it. She said these days they just splint it. She also bandaged it up and gave me a sling but said that was more for comfort and to warn other people to keep away from my hand! But there is tremendous piece of mind in knowing that it is setting correctly and experts have looked at it. I have a follow up with a hand specialist next week to check progress. So head along to A&E – they are lovely people doing an amazing job and they won’t yell at you for leaving it 2 weeks.
