How do you know if your hand is broken?

Came off on the ice this morning and thought I’d broken my hand, but now i’m not so sure. Its badly swollen but I can move all my fingers and make a weak fist (but it really hurts) – does that mean that its not broken?

I’m waiting in A&E for an xray but its like a warzone and I don’t fancy sitting around here for 4 hours waiting to be seen if I can help it…would rather just go to the pharmacy and get some ibuprofen and something for the swelling?

Even if you have an x-ray
Even if you have an x-ray they might not know if you have broken it of not, some broken bones take a week to be able to see on x-ray.

I broke my hand years ago (18 years olds coming out of the pub – other group of 18 years olds – sarcastic comments and so on). It was badly swollen after but a nurse said she didn’t think it was broken as I was able to move it. How wrong she was. It’s never been the same since. Get an x-ray.

    Look around the A&E waiting
Look around the A&E waiting room for some drunk who has turned up feeling “a bit sick”. Punch him hard in the face with your hurty hand. If you double up with excruciating pain, it’s broken. Never fails.

The pain is on the left side
The pain is on the left side of my left hand, just before the knuckles of my little finger and the next finger.

There is some pain in the wrist and fingers, but that feels more like a sprain. The hand part with the pain is swollen, but not massively.

I think it got crunched beneath my weight and the handlebar/brake – it was enough force the the left brake & hood twisted around.

Is the pain in your hand/fingers or is it more in your wrist? In particular the joint between your hand and lower wrist?

    Just have the X-ray. Then
Just have the X-ray. Then you’ll know.

You might as well as you’re there and the Govt keeping banging on about over 90% of people are seen within 4 hours, so you must be next.
