Don’t forget the bit where his ban was extended because he was caught speeding again within one week of returning to the roads…

(edit) And he admits he was “only” driving 5 mph over the 20mph limit.  So, 20% over the limit.  But that’s OK because he thinks everyone does it…

He’s the kind of driver that gives drivers a bad name (or does that collective bullship only work with cyclists?)

    Speeding and “the man claims

Speeding and “the man claims he didn’t actually see the woman before, after or during the event he was later banned because of”.

Considering that the main evidence was dash-cam footage (from a passing car) I fail to see how he can dispute it. If he’s unable to recognise the danger he created, then maybe he needs a much longer driving ban – put him on a bike and let him learn some roadcraft before allowing him back in charge of tonnes of speeding death metal.

    Read that just earlier.

I think e-scooters really demonstrate how backward we’ve been with getting people around. There’s a clear need for people to travel shorter distances (5 miles or less?) that don’t require a car as it’s just getting a person from A to B. Obviously we all want people on bikes and getting some active transport, but e-scooters really appeal due to their fun factor and ease of use.

Here in Bristol we have loads of them around, both legal and illegal and I welcome them as it gets drivers to expect non-cars to be filtering and taking up space on the roads. Unfortunately, the riders are experiencing abuse from some drivers too, but at least that means cyclists aren’t the only target (be better if the problem drivers just hopped on a bike/scooter themselves).

I did try using a Genuine

I did try using a Genuine Innovations kit, but I had trouble using the two-pronged tool and it soon became a single-pronged tool which had no chance of working.

I brought the stans when it came out becuase it was cheaper than the dynaplug one at the time and I wanted a contained easy to use unit (after bad experiences with old school slugs).. I still haven’t used it.. I’m sorta looking forward to it, one day..

The Dynaplug one is supposed to be the one to have, buy that one.

I’ve used the Dynaplug once and it worked beautifully. Took only a couple of minutes to push the plug in the hole, rotate the wheel a couple of times to slosh sealant around and then CO2 it (with the valve uppermost to prevent the sealant setting from the cold gas). I didn’t bother trimming the ends as I figured they’d just get squished into the tyre and worn down soon enough which they did.

    Maybe raise a complaint about

Maybe raise a complaint about them denying you your victim rights to get an update (https://www.gov.uk/your-rights-after-crime). They’ll probably argue that you’re not a victim, but they’re wrong and you can argue that you felt significant fear from the incident and are clearly a victim of poor driving.

    I’ve found that the Schwalbe

I’ve found that the Schwalbe Pro Ones are very delicate compared to other tubeless tyres, so although 3mm should be fine with sealant, you may have trouble.

One idea is to use wetsuit rubber glue to fix the hole (e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322419863015?epid=1540671415) and once that’s set you should be good to fit it again.

    Bleeding the brakes shouldn’t

Bleeding the brakes shouldn’t take more than five minutes if you’ve got the right tools and have done it before. If you get the right bleed kit, it’ll come with the little screw-in pot for road levers and then it’s really easy to use. I don’t know why it would take someone 25 minutes to fix – that sounds like the time to replace a hose.

Serious question – how much of an issue is turning a bike upside down from the point of view of creating air bubbles?

Unlikely to cause much of an issue depending on how long the bike’s upside down and how much fettling is going on. If an air bubble starts floating up (down) the hose, then it’ll likely float back down (up) when the bike is righted. If you’re really worried, you could try putting a rubber band or bit of tape to keep the levers depressed before turning it upside down as that should make it a closed system.

It didn’t immediately occur to me that racism might have played a part – I thought it was just the usual pro-driver attitude. But yes, it certainly seems like racist cops.

And he’s right too. I’d also include e-scooterists as they’re definitely sharing in the general abuse that some drivers give to other road users.

John, the point is that we don’t need a tribe at all. It’s not a matter of looking down or up to anyone. Simply, I don’t feel that somehow I have to belong in the same category as someone else simply because there’s a bike involved. That kind of categorisation doesn’t help anyone, except those who screech with anti-cycling hysteria every five minutes.

Part of the point of including absolutely anyone under the umbrella of “cyclists” is that we aren’t a collective and that the category shouldn’t carry any meaning apart from “someone cycling”. When idiots complain about “cyclists”, we need to remind them that we want idiots out of cars and onto bikes – they’ll cause less harm that way.
