    Consensus seems to be that

Consensus seems to be that when on the turbo you’re always pedalling, thus an hour’s ride on there is harder than an hour outside where you’d maybe freewheel/soft pedal downhill for a certain amount of it.

I guess by the same token if you are measuring drivetrain wear by kms ridden then you’d expect turbo use to incur wear in fewer kms than road use as you’d always be pedalling pretty hard.

Not seen anything to quantify wear rates though.

    Using Chrome in Windows 10

Using Chrome in Windows 10 adblockplus is blocking all forum replies and all comments below main page stories, just get the wee circle of loading.

Guess that may be by design!

EDIT: Ignore that, now I have signed in to make the above comment I can see forum and main page comments even with Adblockplus on (which seems to not block most of the ads anyway!)

Went to the French Alps last
Went to the French Alps last year, don’t think I ever topped 60kmph, 65 maximum for a handful of seconds maybe. Just not that comfortable above that speed.

Concentrate on technique and you can get into a rhythm. If you’re following someone faster/more confident than you you can use them as a rough guide for braking points but at the end of the day if they are faster then just let them go away from you bit by bit. There aren’t any prizes for going fast.

Mountain forecast is the one, thanks.

Think I may have been underestimating how much opportunity there is to buy food up at altitude – the presence of a brewery is a monumental bonus!

Cheers all for the helpful comments.

If anyone wants to chime in on their favourite climbs while they’re here then go ahead. Current thinking is Telegraphe-Galibier one day, then also try and do north side of Glandon, Croix de Fer from the south side (approaching from Bourg D’Oisans), Alpe D’Huez, Lacets de Montvernier & Col du Chaussy over the course of the week.

All very dependent on how we handle back to back Alps days as both me and my riding buddy are a bit less trained than we’d hoped having both had football injuries at the start of the summer. We have a car so have options to drive to reduce overall kms and time and get to near the start of the climbs.

    Thanks for the replies, most

Thanks for the replies, most useful. Windy.com is a great resource.

Will take a bunch of rain kit to France with me but looks like packable rain jacket, cap, maybe a buff should cover a typical day especially if storms are mostly late afternoon by which time we should have completed most of the rides we have planned.

    Google translate downloaded.

Can’t find the water point app but this website is pretty good https://www.eau-cyclisme.com/eau-departement-savoie-d73.htm

Was going to take lights anyway but good tip.

    Orla Chennoui (sp) knows what

Orla Chennoui (sp) knows what she’s on about but is mostly there as a presenter, which she does well – mostly she is just there to bring in the panel. Not sure what it is about her that you find annoying?

Wiggins on the other hand I find pretty poor as a broadcaster. He’s good when speaking from experience, but he obviously doesn’t watch a great deal of cycling any more as his knowledge of current riders is pretty bad – has to revert to ‘the bloke from Astana’ or something general quite frequently – then Brian Smith gets a turn and knows everything about pretty much every rider. On his podcast he just seems to want to be contrarian and controversial as much as possible but doesn’t really seem to have much conviction behind what he says when someone else picks him up on things. Probably he knows his quotes get picked up by the papers if he is a bit of a s*** stirrer.

At home I have an Asgard shed

At home I have an Asgard shed, £450.

Then out and about I have a gold rated D-lock, £24, and a cable lock that the D-lock goes through to secure my child seat, £12. Have a reasonably secure shed at work so don’t go crazy on locks.

Pay £220/year to insure my two bikes (worth £1500 & £1100 new), so if they get nicked then not that big a deal. Already had the bike I had sentimental attachment to stolen, so the current two being stolen just means new bike time.

    I find discs (TRP Hy-Rds)

I find discs (TRP Hy-Rds) much better in heavy rain. Also I can slam the anchors on and stop quicker if a driver pulls a dick move in town in any condition. But they are pretty fiddly to set up perfectly and are expensive.

Personally if I were buying a new bike I would only bother with discs if I needed to commute on it, if it were my ‘summer bike’ I wouldn’t bother as I personally rarely go for a leisure ride if the weather isn’t half decent, certainly not often enough to drop a few hundred quid extra. I don’t have bling wheels so there is no money saving there in my case.

They also say using copperslip grease between the back of the pad and the piston helps reduce noise.

Never bothered myself, quite like scaring the shit out of people who have crossed the road in front of me without looking when I haul the anchors on. Only really get noise in the wet anyway.

I have the Hy-Rds* which use

I have the Hy-Rds* which use the same pad shape and haven’t really noticed much difference between the stock pads, shimano, clarks, uber brakes and life-line ones (all of them organic/resin pads). Yet to try Disco Brakes ones but they were recommended by quite a few people on a very similar thread to this on single track world and are dirt cheap. They have all improved after the first few rides but it isn’t night and day. Would advise getting some isopropyl alcohol for cleaning rotors now and then. Just fitted compressionless housing to the front yesterday and they do seem a bit better for that, although I also installed new pads at the same time.

*Were also a bit lacklustre until ‘overfilling’ them with brake fluid.

Before they closed down the guys at Roll for the Soul had become my go to place. Their main mechanic has started his own thing, might be good availability now as he is quite new as his own business. http://www.benscycleworkshop.com/

Big fan of Jake’s, but there is generally a bit of a waiting list for work.

Bike UK everything seems super expensive, guess you’re paying partly for the location and nice big footprint shop.
