It’s been established that larger chainrings/cogs combos have higher mechanical efficiency due to lower chain friction (see the huge jockey wheels that some pros use).

    The diffrences are probably marginal.

Friction Facts did a test on this a wee bit ago, quite interesting and along the lines of what you might suspect regarding radius of curvature and chain line effecting friction.. was slightly surprised at the magnitude actually.

    Genius picture 🙂

(On that subject though, Bioshift has a manual over-ride which is, apparently, easy to toggle – not sure about other auto-shift set-ups)

    What groupset type – Shimano

What groupset type – Shimano/Campagnolo 10/11-speed ? If you don’t mind the marginally wider gaps in a couple of shifts then perhaps just a cassette change might be worth considering considering, e.g. 11-32, 11-30

Excellent ! I queried them the other week about the moderation status and they sent the following yesterday (I’m not Mr Sawyer btw, think they must have had a bit of a braino when replying) ..

    Dear Mr Sawyer,

    Thank you for your email.

I am sorry it has taken so long to reach a decision on your petition. We are experiencing a particularly busy period and many petitions often involved additional research and fact checking.

A member of our team will contact you shortly with a decision.

    Many thanks,

Another thing to consider, if you’ve not done so already, is to get in contact with a CX club near you. They often have good bikes going for decent prices, especially at this time of year, and there’s the chance to pick up some tips and contacts. Good luck with the search, wish I was in your position!

Planet X XLS with Apex and

Planet X XLS with Apex and BB7s is currently £ 900, and Riva 11/BB7 @ £1,000  – fairly sure the PXLIQUID25 voucher doesn’t work (haven’t tried though) but  you can get both on the never-never with them at 0%.

    About 1500km on 25mm Greens –

About 1500km on 25mm Greens – front file tread is pretty much as new, flat on the centre on the rear but that was mostly done on one ill-conceived trainer ride.. so difficult to know exactly how it would have faired otherwise. One pinch flat in a deep, sharp edged pot-hole (hardly the tyres fault) but no penetration punctures thus far. Couple of very minor cuts on the tread but I do tend to use them on all sorts of tarmac, broken surfaces, gravel, fire roads and smoother single-track… don’t give them the abuse I would tubeless but they’ve surprised me so far, thought something that light, comfortable, grippy and seemingly soft would be ripped by now. Not as silky smooth as some of the very finest, e.g. Open Corsa but very good ride even with butyl inners – FWIW i’d recommend them and will be replacing as an when they wear out. Wiggle and PlanetX seem to be the cheapest at the moment, might get one in now with the power of Christmas vouchers.

This kind of stuff is pretty disappointing really – Shimano should make sure their stuff works out of the box.

They do, this may be frustrating but shit happens – this is the real world and in it there is typically a distribution of things fucking up, often  the probability of which is inversely proportional to the severity and frequently (but not necessarily) skewed towards the beginning and end of the expected life-time. This issue is hardly endemic is it ?

I’ve also got a bag of 4 rubbery tubes about 30mm long with a slit running from end to end. They obviously go over a wire or something but I have not yet figured out what they are for. The German on the packet says ‘Kabelhuellenueberzug’ whatever one of those is (does not seem to translate). I’m sure they are not that important but I’m glad I’ve got a bag of them just in case :D

They might be cable frame protectors, like these

I use some spiral Fibrax ones – quite like them, others prefer heli-tape, either work.
