    Nice collective generalisation there….

You want to have a bet on that ?

To be honest, when reading your comment, it sounds like an apology to motorists.

Sounded like someone using the normal “they’re not cyclists” excuse, often in conjunction with the “all motorists” generalisation from the first point…

There are all sorts of people, and they use all sorts of transport, and a number of them are twats – it’s just that twats in larger, faster vehicles cause more damage, more easily, than the others.

This is frustrating and rapidly causing people to leave the site I imagine. Doesn’t work on an android phone browser, fyi.  It only works when I log on using a laptop that it works and I hardly ever do that.

most of the people suffering from this are probably not able to comment anyway on this thread!

Works on mine. I had to get the desktop version first though in order to sign in. Then once signed in, I can see comments and then swap back to mobile version. This also using adguard 2.1

Working on mine now – mainly due to the fact it looks like they’ve disabled the new mobile view by default (available via the annoying ‘Smartphone’ button on the right)..

    I strongly suspect brooksby

I strongly suspect brooksby is absolutely on the money, be interesting to hear how your traffic flow was being measured. It was taking me at least 2 hits to get the page I wanted due to the new mobile site – such gems as the links to articles from the ‘classic’ view site don’t open in ‘classic’ mode so you have to fudge the URL each time or use the desktop view (which sucks on a ‘phone). I’ve pretty much stopped visiting via mobile now TBH, and wait until i’m on a desktop/laptop.

That might just be the other way around..

Partially true – but what you can do is take a whole bunch of quite crap views and bung them together to make a half-decent one – astronomers (amongst others) have been doing this for years because they often have basically no choice.

I imagine that’d be tricky to do for a car as it’s moving so much. You’d probably have to process the images to transform the positions of the reg plate before you’d be able to compare the different shots.

Indeed – that how it works in general. It’s tedious but relatively simple to do by hand but there is auto/semi-auto software the does needful I believe. It’s a long time (> 20 years) since I worked with image recognition people so I imagine things have changed considerably though.

He’s already got discs on the bike so tricky to avoid. Also for a fixed speed and yaw angle, could be 8-10 watts, could be 10-12, could be 1-2,  could be less, we just don’t know on this set-up – there’s no general “discs cost X watts” factor to apply.

Do you have any other frames

Do you have any other frames ? It might be possible to stack them and try and increase the edge definitions if so, the right hand side letters are close to being legible as it is.

Miche do a 12-28 11 speed Shimano cassette. Will be more cost effective. I used them for a few years without any problems. Maybe not 100% as smooth shifting but only tiny margins.

Even with Shimano some of the sprockets come in different timings (phases) depending on the cassette, so you may be unfortunate enough to have a wee glitch even then. That said, might be fine and the Shimano docs have all of this detail in them if you want to check (e.g. which sprocket has which timing and what the serial number is for each).

Dear Editor – is there any news on how/if the mobile version of the website will be fixed/re-redesigned?  Over the weekend I logged in – by going to the ‘classic view’ of the site, as I couldn’t see how to on the new version – refreshed in the new version and it promptly crashed.  The new version still doesn’t have any visible comments and frankly, as I’ve said before, the comments are half the fun, certainly a main reason I read the site. Without them, I’ll probably have to go elsewhere for my cycling news.

The article links from the site on mobile in classic mode aren’t appending the “?fromt=yes” to the URL – with that on you see the comments and the article in classic mode, without it defaults to ‘new’ borked mode instead.

…which means I still can’t see them on my phone. F*@$%ing annoying, tbh.

Yup – completely agree about annoying, although pasting that option onto the end of the URL works on the phone as well (hardly ideal). Can’t say i’m entirely surprised – they’re really fucked up the comments last time they did a rewrite (and they still don’t work properly, e.g. links from the main page to a particular comment) not to mention honestly one of the very worse pieces of search functionality i’ve had the misfortune to experience in nearly 40 odd years of arsing around with computers…

If the tech companies can make (flawed) self driving cars, why can’t they make self limiting cars? Driver at the wheel, operating the controls and hopefully alert to hazards, but not able to break the speed limit, arrive at junctions at breakneck speed, go the wrong way down a motorway etc. etc.

The know-how is clearly there, but not the political will.

Self driving cars seem to be the undisputable future, without much real debate or thought about the most appropriate application of the technology.

The problem with that idea is how do you market the cars to the poor drivers?

Approximately 90% of drivers think that they are better drivers than average, so you’d be left marketing this to the 10% of bad drivers who realise that they’re bad drivers.

It’d be like selling a road bike with stabilisers fitted.

Nah – I reckon it’ll be relatively easy for a goodly percentage, maybe even the vast majority. Whilst there will always be folk enjoy the interaction, or the routes they take, (and i’m one of those to some extent) I whole-heartedly believe that basically no-one really actually likes driving most, if not all, of their journies. It’s nearly always shite in towns, where a lot of the journey instances actually are, and dull on the longer ones. Traffic jams and congestion require effort and input far beyond their benefit. Even simple navigation and route planning are things that many would happily turn over to automation. If you had something you could just jump into and go somewhere without having to actively control it, I think an awful lot of people would jump at the chance – part of the pleasure of train journies, of the convenience of taxis and the like. That is might actually reduce the horrific amount of incidents that result in injury and death, improve the flow of what (hopefully reducing) traffic there is and so reduce pollution, grid-lock, frustration and wasted time and hopefully start to turn the idea of ‘car as prized asset’ to more of ‘car as service’ (might be being a bit hopeful there…) is to be welcomed by all if it can be actually implemented safely.

At least that’s the simple version.

I use a Campag drivetrain with an Ultegra cassette and Sram chain. I know it’s sacrilege but you can use any 11 speed wheels and it shifts just as well. My Athena carbon was cheaper than 105 at the time

I guess you are using Shimano or Sram levers for that to work?

It’ll work with Campag levers – cassette spacing is the ~same for SRAM/Shimano/Campagnolo 11-speed.
