Shifters will need a change –

Shifters will need a change AFAIK – you could avoid a wheelset change if something like the HG-7/800 11-34 cassettes would suit your riding (they fit on a 10-speed freehub like the other 11-speed Shimano MTB cassettes) but there’s obviously slightly more gaps than an 11-28.

Budget is as cheap as possible however I know you have to pay a lot for a quiet smart trainer . I have looked at lots online but you don’t really know what they are like until you get it and try it for yourself. Thanks for the help guys

You probably have already, but just in case these two might help with some more info (Ray Makers blog is the go-to place for trainer reviews for many, and Shane Miller has a no-nonsense approach to breaking things…)

The early Fluxes had a couple of issues that resulted in quite a few returns, one problem was an externally sourced part they ended up bringing in-house, they seemed to sort those reasonably quickly though (there was still a chunk of old stock in circulation). Feedback I’ve seen is that later models were solid. The new Flux 2 looks like a monster for low speed stuff too.

What sort of budget do you

What sort of budget do you have ? The latest range of smart trainers has some incredibly quiet models but they’re still not at the cheaper end of the spectrum (although increasingly well priced). The Kickr Core is the obvious one there, although that has meant that existing quiet(ish) models are going down in price (the Elite Direto is now regularly around £ 600 for instance).

Give it a year or two for everyone to upgrade to disc brakes and Road Direct Mount will be the next must-have feature that requires a new frame 🙂

The Shimano ones all support a hanger adaptor, like how they’re currently fitted to frames not specifically designed around DRD derailleurs.

It may well get better, they are trying by the sound of it. I was just hoping we wouldn’t have a similar CF to the previous re-write which was painful and we lost some useful functionality * in the forum/comments areas. Ah well….

Getting even more OT – whatever happened to Shimano’s direct mount derailleur standard, which IIRC removes the need for all this hanger-bending malarkey?

AFAIK pretty much all newer Shimano RDs are direct mount compatible, MTB ones have been for some while. Plenty of DRD compatible MTB frames as well, not sure how much it’s caught on in the road world.

I’m tring to work out why disc brakes are more difficult to set up, and I can’t. It was always a case of loosening the calipers slightly, squeeze the lever, tighten the caliper and off you go.

If we’re talking about hydraulic disc brakes then they’re not – and that sounds about right for the most part (there’s other fettling you can do depending on the brakes, but that’s basically it).

FWIW – the 6800 GS RD will take an HG-x00 11-34 without any issues. Fitted a HG-800 and it didn’t even need an adjust on the b-tension screw (new chain was fitted at the time)

Those that haven’t, get the bloody thing filled in, it only takes a couple of minutes (unless you want to provide detailed drawings of your current, elaborate kit storage system).

    Good point.
