I had a 653 – nice enough bike to ride – but harsh compared to the carbon TCR I replaced it with.

I’d not bother in a thunderstorm.  I remember camping one year in a flat area – awoke at 7am to a huge thunderstorm.  Got the family out of the tent and into the car and we went for an early breakfast.  (surprisingly hard to find at 7am on a sunday in wales).

Came back later after it had subsided.  Read the paper the next day and a herd of cows had been killed as they sheltered under a tree in an adjacent field. 16 of them – the poor buggers.

I’d not mess around with lightning.

If you want to wear a helmet, wear one.

If you don’t want to wear one, don’t. Just be sure to tell your family that the possibility exists that you will be a financial and emotional burden on them, possibly for decades.

    And enjoy your feeding tube.

Wearing a helmet when riding a bike doesn’t ensure that you will never ‘be a financial and emotional burden on them, possibly for decades.’

It might reduce that risk very, very slightly, but with an attitude that suggests the helmet will save you from any brain injury then I suspect it would increase the risk very significantly.

Yes this. It’s ridiculous to say that you won’t suffer brain injury wearing a helmet. Schumacher wore one skiing after all ?

Only time i tried to watch a giro stage it was cancelled due to snow….

They’ll have set up the finish line hours before and there may be things going on round there – so I’d give up plans of riding through and past.  Presumably team coaches and things will be up there ?

You should be able to ride almost to the finish – but you’d have to be off the roads a couple of hours before the finish to be safe.  Take lots of warm clothes and I’ve never taken a lock to watch a race in the UK or Europe.  The road is basically closed and your bikes aren’t far away are they ?

That is a pity – but as BF says – there are plenty of other operators out there.  And just sorting it all out yourself isn’t that hard.

Just out of interest what is the legal position regarding riding any closed road event without paying an entry fee? Does the road closure order just cover motor vehicles?

It’s a dick move.  Ride elsewhere that day – the roads will be free of cyclists !

They are easier to get out of than toestraps – at least you dont have to bend over to unflick the strap.

So in that way clipless would be better – but is he using his straps tight ?

If I was 70 – I’d probably not bother.  Clipless have been around for at least 30 years so if he didnt switch in his 40s – I think he’s missed the boat

Avoid castelli as their quality and sizing is Awful.

DHB Aeron have been good for me – I’ve done lots of century rides in them with no problems. Not needed to try their expensive version.

    Sounds fair enough to me.

You don’t have to accept all of the work – but it does sound like your bike has been neglected. It’s kind of useful to have working brakes.

If your chain hasnt worn then

If your chain hasnt worn then either option should work.

If you use the chain after its stretched then yeah your cassette wears too.

There’s no point in a carbon
There’s no point in a carbon stem anyway. They’re no lighter.

Buying a dodgy import carbon stem isn’t a bright idea.

Whats the point of this clip? Are you after a ban on cyclists drinking from water bottles too?

He’s not in control of a tonne of High powered medal. He’s cycling. He’s no significant risk to anyone.
