Ah! The ‘he didn’t mean to do it’ dodge. The police/ CPS should be able to get it down to ‘careless’ at worst, and possibly even less if the driver comes up with ‘a medical incident and I have no recollection, but I’m fine now’

Otherwise law-abiding, hard-working driver has momentary lapse = NFA.

    M&S shopper ‘trapped’ on car

M&S shopper ‘trapped’ on car park lands £60 parking fine

Melanie was ‘trapped’ on Wolstanton Retail Park

“I would like them to add an alternative route out of the car park. I don’t think the current set up is appropriate. They’ve got five major stores and only one exit. We simply couldn’t get out. We were trapped there because of their poor road planning.”

Now Melanie, from Loggerheads 👏🏻 , has appealed her parking penalty. She has since got the fine revoked.

    And there was me thinking

And there was me thinking that drivers liked giving ambulances free passage

Double yellow lines to be installed in Marks Square, Northfleet, outside ellenor Hospice’s alternative entrance

Another comment raised concerns that the double yellow lines would cause a “knock-on effect” as drivers will be “fighting” for spaces elsewhere in the area.

They added: “This proposal will make it virtually impossible for residents to even park in their own road. It has not been thought through at all.”

St Peter’s Wharf Retail Park in Maidstone changes car parking limit from three hours to two

Cllr Rachel Rodwell (Green) said the issue had come onto her radar because of the “amount of dialogue that is happening on social media” discussing how it has been causing problems.

    Part the second

    Part the second

Well, there’s nothing better than to try and get to the bottom of a story like this.

To quote the Gazette & News story, and Cllr Carbrain:

“This is yet another reminder of why Brightlingsea simply cannot take more large-scale development.”

Tendring Council is currently consulting on its new Local Plan, with three of the four options suggesting adding 300 new homes to Brightlingsea, while the “low growth” option still suggests 100.

Mr Carbrain said: “If today’s gridlock proves anything, it’s that our infrastructure is already over capacity.”

Or put another way, “you can’t have somewhere to live because we all like driving our cars” (see also: school places, GP appointments). And I really liked how Court is interfering with an improvement to a bus shelter (if I have the right one – Ten Penny Hill is one of the four roads that meet at Thorrington Cross), outside of his patch, and that would help bus users and ultimately everyone in Brightlingsea.

I found the topic of this bus shelter mentioned in the Torrington Parish Council meeting papers in 2021, and –

“The brick bus shelter at Thorrington Cross, on Brightlingsea Road was built by the Parish Council in the early 1950’s and it has remained largely unchanged ever since.  It was cleaned for a number of years by Pride of Tendring recipient Mr J Baker.  Unfortunately lately it is attracting increasing levels of anti-social behaviour and is in need of changing in design to prevent this.”

    https://e-voice.org.uk/thorringtonparishcouncil/services/bus-shelters/

Another local news take on the traffic chaos story; queues were all the way back to the Novelty Rock Emporium:

Bus stop work causes long delays for Brightlingsea drivers
    https://brightlingsea.info/brightlingsea-news/bus-stop-work-causes-long-delays-for-brightlingsea-drivers/

    Which led me to another:

Brightlingsea town councillor faces code of conduct allegation

Mr Court said that because of the uncertainty he’d taken the “difficult decision” not to accept the traditional nomination for the deputy mayor to take over as mayor in May. “Serving as mayor of Brightlingsea is something I’ve aspired to; it would be a real honour to represent the town in that capacity. However, having worked with others to enhance the town council’s reputation over the past couple of years, my priority has to be ensuring the council isn’t placed in a difficult position if the investigation outcome isn’t in my favour.”

    https://brightlingsea.info/brightlingsea-news/brightlingsea-town-councillor-faces-code-of-conduct-allegation/

And a “watch this space” link for local govt saddoes only – the race is on to clear his name (or not) before the next Mayor of Brightlingsea is chosen:

    https://www.tendringdc.gov.uk/content/complaints-about-councillors

Finally, no-one holding elected office in Essex could possibly have known that on one some random day in March 2025, workmen would appear out of the blue to fix the Tenpenny Hill bus shelter:

    https://travelessex-production-bucket.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/cms-assets/pdfs/busshelters/tendring-bus-shelters-.pdf

If you scroll back through the Google images you will see that the bus pull-in also functions as a vital resting-spot for tired drivers (from all the hard work) perhaps in need of the toilet, with their two year old acting up (families to feed) or to clear a spider away.

Another (driver on council Facebook page) said: “Only in Stoke-on-Trent would they have roadworks on two major roads that cause chaos in Fenton!”

A further reply stated: “The entire city is full of roadworks.”

A sarcastic cyclist added “great timesaver you’ve got there, guys does it cost much to run?”

    Cumbria County Council was a

Cumbria County Council was a 1974 creation, merging the of old County Borough of Carlisle, and counties of Cumberland, and Westmorland – in which Kendal sits.

We’ve since largely gone back to this with the old CCC area being split back into Westmorland & Furness Council and Cumberland Council.

Cumbria has a Lord Lieutenant so as you say exists still for ceremonial purposes – despite only being a C20th creation.

Unpopular opinion – I think the information available when this story was first written up was pretty sketchy.

I’d give the media a pass in this instance as there must be a lot more to come out about what happened here.

What do this lot not understand about private land ownership?   If they were walkers wanting access to a beach I might have some sympathy.

Ah – but they are!  They are dog walkers just wanting the right to walk (their dog).  Of course they have to drive there.

But this land is your land * … until, apparently, it’s “my parking space” (perhaps on a public street, but I’ve used it before so I have first dibs now and if it’s “taken away” I will be down the council with a pitchfork).

    * Living in Scotland, I would generally agree with this idea.

I’m guessing it’s another one where drivers have been helping themselves for many years; it probably started small and (genuinely) no-one minded and gradually progressed to the piss-take and entitlement stage.
