Where have the squirrels gone? And many of the birds too?
I’ve been a home worker since lockdown and in the last 2-3 years have seen squirrels where I don’t recall them before in our garden burying their nuts, my wife feeding and taming several different individuals, splooting (now I know that’s a thing) and I assume aggressing each other in the trees with this chuuu chuuu chuuur noise I didn’t know they made. Now barely a one.
Similar on birds – the dawn chorus in May/June seemed epic. Pigeons and crow family still around, but not the numbers of finches we used to get, we had a brood of starlings who have gone, blackbirds seem to have gone, sparrows in their quarrelsome flocks are around but less frequent. Country walks often silent.

That’s why I find myself featuring the comments like on the Land Rover pavement story – “fair play to him…Most of us are just doing our best, including him.” etc – this effortless pivoting from “leave him be” to “cyclists should be made to…”
But away from our little brand of tribalism, Land Rover man’s actions are plain wrong, (I don’t buy his excuses) yet he is supported, the ones calling it out are branded “mafia” – with some tough times coming up, I wonder how far does this “all just doing our best” thing stretch.

So in a car park you use regularly, you see nothing at all odd in a pole position space being vacant?
Can’t find this location on a map, and it doesn’t look like a grade 1 listed sort of spot, but my guess is the Bath is the sort of place that tries to control the signage paraphernalia that comes with cars, hence this admittedly titchy stud.

You’re a surefire gamblin’ man if you take chances at level crossings, so I suppose having your day(s) in court trying to minimise the incident/ your part in it is a logical sequence.
“…a man of previous good character.” I wonder with what hollow laugh local cyclists would greet that. Remorse? ‘…although the defendant denied dangerous driving he did “express concern as to how bad the incident could’ve been”‘ so that’s all right then.

I’m one less user drawing from the grid when all the demand for aircon threatens us all with blackouts. On sunny days, I put out 2-3 times what I use. If I generate 15 kWh, I cover that day’s energy standing charges – riches indeed. I started in February, so haven’t yet experienced the horror of December and January.

The MO is to manufacture a concern or grievance nearby that somehow always justifies military action. The difference to the other conflicts you reference is the virtual certainty of rinse and repeat by Russia, if they’re allowed to win in Ukraine. I don’t know how we get out of this. Putin being seriously ill or assassinated are examples of wishful thinking. Meantime,you’ll notice the big gas valve that’s appeared on his desk where the red button used to be.
