    Aah, the Brexit

Aah, the Brexit “implementation” problem.  A bit like sewage on the beach – for a clean beach, you need less sewage or best of all no sewage. There is no “good” sewage that can replace the bad.

With that said, and while we wait for the OP to explain where things should have gotten to by now if Brexit had but been done properly, let me fill the void for a bit.

The Brexiter “implementation” argument usually runs – a bit like you get from drivers when things have gone wrong – that Brexit is fine, it’s everyone else – eg remainers with their 48% of the (oh so democratic) vote, the EU, the Blob, etc.

Translated into driver speak – the road was slippery, the cyclist was in the middle of the road, they had dementia or other strangely unforeseen medical episode, it was dark/light/ road was bendy, etc – it’s never them being a rubbish driver.

just drivers. Why all the catastrophising?

I vaccinate between sarcastic ha-ha and deadly accuracy eg when it’s another “cyclists should….” tweet.

    enjoyed the “Avid” piece.

    We (correctly) see them as

We (correctly) see them as actual crimes, along with close passing, but in these instances enforcement is so thin, penalties so light that there is little comeback or deterrent. And here’s the kicker – drivers no longer see what they are doing as wrong – Mikey somehow becomes the controversial figure, the “grass”, the Bad Guy.  Why can’t he leave them alone?

nototheEU and his kin has brought great harm on this country that is set only to continue.  When asked, he cannot identify any benefits – leastways, not to the man in the street: you can bet that someone is benefitting – it’s little more than a a perception or a thing he fancied doing, no wider interests feature.

You might think that after 20 years he might have been able to come up with better. I’ve only been at it for about three myself, and I’ve never managed to get past “people have got too much of everything these days” and “the freedom to do whatever you want” as attempts at justification.  Brexit didn’t invent Covid and it didn’t invade Ukraine, but it’s not helping us get through them.

Anyway, apparently, it’s all the implementation’s fault, so let’s see where that leads us.

You reckon the problem is the implementation of Brexit – so where in your view should we now be at, had it been done in the right way?

    There’s Brexit itself (bad

There’s Brexit itself (bad enough on its own terms) and then what Brexit has ushered in as its follow-through, that probably would not now be happening had Remain won.

    So no Brexit benefits then?

    So no Brexit benefits then?

what was Brexit about?  Not about observable facts, as you’ve made clear.

There’s too much going wrong, too many people suffering real hardship – none of it helped by our being “out” – for this luxurious philosophical vagueness.

If this right-wing coup hadn’t been swung by whatever means, we might not be looking at a government flailing around trying to pull something out of the wreckage that might be somehow be described as an upside with lifting motorway speed limits and slackening already pretty basic MOT requirements. The motor lobby want to go faster, reduce already meagre restrictions and this government is listening because it has nothing else.

Independent candidates stand in UK elections at every level, but very few get supported.  Not sure why you think the referendum was so worthwhile in this regard.

Your take about the negotiations and implementation is delusional – apart the whole proposition being flawed from the start, we turned down many opportunities offered by the EU to make it less worse all round.  Now, to them we are a bizarre irrelevance. We were never going to be allowed to have our cake and eat it – I don’t think those claiming to press for this believed it either.

I’d love to say full rejoin, but as a nation we need come to our senses en masse for that to realistic – how much hardship must there be before we do? But there I go again – you won’t ever change your mind.

Nope. If he wants to come on this forum with a stupid and provocative handle, I will go on challenging him.

I have used that handle for over 20 years on all my online activity and apart from on here have only had two people complain about it previously, both from games I play.

It certainly isn’t meant to be provocative now although I imagine pre referendum that was probably on my mind. I also don’t believe it is stupid but you are entitled to your opinion and I’m not going to insult you over it.

if you feel the need to type Yes to the EU after all my comments I take no offence at all but please do at least be polite.

So tell us about all the Brexit benefits then.

Cycling wise, an awful lot of people are perceiving increased driver anger on the roads. That has links to the referendum result and the consolidation of a right-wing “us” identity with cyclists being among among the out groups. It is costing lives and a lot of people who would cycle are quitting.
Rose in Germany no longer sell to the UK and Spa no longer sell to Europe.  Port queues, shortages.
If you hadn’t noticed, we’re also getting massively poorer as a nation: interest rates and inflation that we didn’t have during the EU membership.
A government that remains bizarrely stuck, a nation like a pavement parked SUV driver that cannot accept they were and are wrong.
The hope with Brexit was to fracture the EU, but thankfully the pressures of this year have served to make it stronger.
