Outraged Devon villagers block SWW from carrying out planned works
Outraged Devon villagers say they are taking a stand against South West Water – by parking their cars over a key stretch of road where contractors from the water corporation are planning to carry out works.
It comes during a busy weekend of events in the community hall, including a memorial service this afternoon for a much-loved member of the community, with an expected turnout of around 100 people. To prevent disruption for those wishing to pay their respects, villagers have taken it upon themselves to remove the traffic cones, and park cars over the area marked out for another hole to be dug.
Anne Moore, treasurer of the Washfield Memorial Hall, said: “We are all very angry and frustrated. Our requests to stave off this work until Monday have fallen on deaf, uncaring ears, and South West Water arrived this morning with a view to shutting the road to do the works.

I read on that fountain of truth and accuracy Facebook that it was a McDonalds near an army base that started this. The story goes that soldiers weren’t allowed out of their cars off base (on their way to/from home, presumably).
The plucky franchisee created a hole in the side and the rest is drivers happily queuing for 10 minutes, but losing their minds after 10 seconds behind cyclists.

Spar owner says e-scooter parking is ‘destroying’ shop
“It’s turning customers away from the shop.
“The bin men can’t even get down Claremont Crescent to empty my bin store – now the council have made matters worse.
“Additionally, when I receive deliveries, the lorry blocks the road completely, causing a significant inconvenience with no solution for the delivery vehicle to park and unload.”

(Havent seen a “look at all these scooters left all over the pavement” story lately.)

Drivers angry about e-scooter and bike bays in Southampton
“Having had a car written off after a driver crashed into his vehicle while it was parked, and claiming drivers speed down the road at 50mph, he felt the bay was also an accident waiting to happen.
He said: “Not only do we all struggle to park on Priory Road but we have seen people travel up to 50 miles per hour – they will go straight into those bollards.””

Ashford Borough Council
Ashford Borough Council reintroduces free parking at The Ashford Cinema’s car park at Elwick Place
A spokesman for the authority, which is run by a Ashford Independents/Green Party coalition, said: “The free parking will make the cinema more accessible and help increase the number of visits.”
https://www.kentonline.co.uk/ashford/news/new-car-park-to-open-in-town-centre-195339/
“Meanwhile, a third person noted: “If they can do this for the council-run cinema, why couldn’t they just do four hours of free parking in all of the town centre car parks to encourage people there?””
Poor old Brexit-voting Ashford, Kent, so many hopes pinned on the International station – currently with no international services – just down the road from this site.
https://www.kentonline.co.uk/kent/news/live-eu-referendum-results-97758/
This council-owned site, a former market, became a cinema and recently the most recent operator Picturehouse pulled out. There’s stiff competition from an out of town Cineword.

Parking after 3 pm was only ever £1, so all this is is a change back to daytime free parking for cinema-goers introduced by er the Greens and Independents.
I can understand it that as landlord, the council needed to try to do something to keep the lights on, but free daytime parking isn’t going to make a non-viable entertainment site viable. What a mess.
