You sir are a gent, chapeau to you! One of the problems with that plan is I only have one eye, so unless the OP is in a similar condition, id could be tricky! Plus the Mrs thinks she has me at home this Sunday…wouldn’t want to disappoint her…

Got a Propel in April, loving it! Paid full price but am happy with that. Did an Everesting on it in May, 230 miles in 27 hours so comfy enough 😉
Tried a Supersix at the time, also very good but I thought the Propel looked more special.Daveyraveygravey

Hmm…if you aren’t sure, why go mad on the budget? Almost without doubt, whatever you spend, within a month you will want to upgrade or get a new bike. Generally, buying something and then upgrading parts will cost more than just buying a better bike to start with. Have a look at ebay and what 500-700 will get you, work with that for a year or so, and then buy something more expensive when you have a better idea of what really floats your boatDaveyraveygravey

I’d take a week off work and go and demo as many models as I could, and make the lbs’s do a lot of sucking up to you.
I had a demo on a 2.5k Giant Propel earlier this year, it was absolutely fantastic. Can’t imagine what the 4k one would be like!
Something a bit more boutique maybe? Cyclist magazine is always testing bikes around that mark.July 18, 2015 at 7:13 pm in reply to: Ride London Surrey 100 logistics – borderline abandonment. #853881Daveyraveygravey
Whining miserable bastards!
Whining miserable bastards! The show is free to get in and you aren’t forced to buy anything! I did the Dartmoor Classic last month, and that also obliged you to pick up your papers and register the day before.
And if you think it isn’t worth it for a bike ride, you obviously haven’t done Ridelondon. It is a unique and special event, and unlike any other bike ride I have done, organised or not.
I would love to be doing it this year, along with the 75,000 or so oversubscribers. If you can’t be arsed to register, don’t enter the ballot and let those that really want to do it have a better chanceDaveyraveygravey

I know it’s a bit sad, but I don’t like the colour scheme of this years bikes, and that put me off as well. The Cannondale sounds great and it has got me thinking again. I have found one in my size and am going to go and test ride it next week!
When I was researching my new bike, I couldn’t seperate my shortlist on spec; there were 10 possibles and all were very similar within about £50 of each other. I put pics of them on my desktop at work, and they even all looked similar, and were all black or grey. I then started looking at Giant’s Propel, which looked a bit different, and the red and white paint scheme convinced me. So colour and looks can be important.

What about a Trek Domane? A friend has one as his main bike, does all kinds of riding on it, including 600 km audax. The spec probably won’t match the Ribble, but you should be able to ride one.Daveyraveygravey

The other thing I noticed was the road was in a shocking state along a good deal of it, like a drain had been laid along the length about a metre from the left hand side, and it had been badly filled in after. You can’t ride a bike in there, and you shouldn’t be expected to.Daveyraveygravey

Scumbag. Not sure how he could be identified though. All the comments are anti him, which is a relief.“Funny commentary supplied by me” – what a dick! “20 abreast” ?! Apart from you can’t see the bikes through the other car for half the video.

All you Defy lot are missing
All you Defy lot are missing out! I have the Propel Advanced 1, it is plenty comfortable for 107 miles of the Dartmoor Classic yesterday and 230 miles of Everesting a month ago! I commute on mine too.
Maybe if I had ridden a Defy on those two rides I would think otherwise, but the Propel is a fantastic piece of kit. It looks amazing, and the red and white paint job is so much nicer than all these stealth black bikes.
I spent months choosing my bike, aero bikes were not on the radar for ages. I couldn’t decide on spec, so ending up putting pictures on my desktop screen saver at work, and they all look so similar. I was in the Giant shop looking at a deal on the previous year’s Defy when I saw the Propel, and that was me sold. The test ride only convinced me further.Daveyraveygravey
Find a friendly farmer and
Find a friendly farmer and arrange the biggest tractor load of cow-sh1t to be dumped all over his pride and joy.
Failing that definitely report it. The best you can hope for is the police go round there and are particularly officious about it, which may make the young tits not do it to the next cyclist they come across.
I don’t know how people can turn the other cheek and say get over it. It’s stupid behaviour and why should we accept it is ok?Daveyraveygravey

I’m loving my Giant Propel, but not sure I’d want to get involved in the hurley burley of racing on it.Daveyraveygravey
Don’t forget there is another
Don’t forget there is another hill somewhere in Wimbledon, about 90 miles in. No-one mentions it, and it isn’t that hard on its own, but at the end of RL when you think you just have a flat bimble along the Embankment left it is a nasty shock!Newlands isn’t bad, 45 miles in, big feed stop at the top. It took me an age to get through there in the first year, I would avoid it if possible.
Leith Hill is quite tough; it has narrow parts and the surface is awful in places. It can be a struggle to ride up with more than half the road blocked by walkers/pushers. I think it is around the 50 mile mark.
Boxhill is a lovely smooth surface, 60-odd miles in, very steady gradient (I think the Canadian Army put the road in for their tanks in preparation for DDay). The views are stunning, but it isn’t that steep due to the hairpins; I would say you would have to be a real novice to find it hard.
Lots of good advice previously, really focus on your pacing and staying at what you think is comfortable. I tried to hang on to a bunch that were doing 23 mph last year, it is a brilliant feeling while it lasts but really saps your energy for later.
I think doing a long ride is very important, it helps you prepare for things you may not have thought about, cramp in your shoulders, aching wrists, sore feet from being in cleats all day, never mind your butt. Work out how long you can go without stopping so you can figure out when to stop. If you have to stop every 2 hours, then don’t try and get a third of the way round without a break.

Have a look at Giant Propel, similar to the Fuji Transonic. 1400 gets you 105 and 1650 gets you Ultegra.
I just bought the Ultegra version at the end of May, loving it. Test rode one and the Fuji; I thought the Fuji slightly harsher than the Propel.I just did a 28 hour 230 mile Everesting on it so am happy it is comfy enough for me. I think it looks the biz too!

I really want to like
I really want to like Cyclist, it’s a proper quality mag on decent paper with great writing and pictures, but the reviews are (almost) always really top end bikes. They usually review 4 bikes an issue, one is often a ladies/women’s fit and the other 3 are rarely less than £2k. One month I think all 3 were over £5k! I don”t mind reading about a super-expensive almost-pro level bike now and again, but they are just too expensive. -
