Five, maybe six years for me.

Five, maybe six years for me. I found some actual research some years back (a guy had people send him old helmets and he tested them) and unless it’s been treated like crap the “every three years” recommendation by the manufacturers is either a money grab or hedging against lawsuits, depending on how generous you feel.

Really effective use of a mirror and wide angle lens to make a room look larger. He could be standing near the corner of a 4 m x 5 m room. Still large, but not as massive as it first appears.

I am not convinced by that argument. Are you suggesting that people should simultaneously buy a premium product and a budget product, to verify whether the budget product does its job?

How was I or anyone to know that the Decathlon tool would be so inaccurate? I had my suspicions after using it, as described in my original post, but chains are standardised. If you decide to design a checker that is going to fit between a number of links with the value x , then you get y, which is a precise figure based on the standard lengths of links and gaps in a chain. Your checker then needs to be 0.75y long on one side and 0.5y long on the other. Not exactly a difficult engineering and manufacturing challenge, so one just assumed the tool must have been right, even though chain life was so short.

I can only be faulted for not trusting my own judgement and buying a different tool earlier. Decathlon are to blame for a dud design, which they did not bother to test or compare to other similar tools to assess real-world performance.

    Sorry for the whooosh!

An extreme ‘out there’ unbalanced setup. Why not make things better with a simple Carradice QR on the seat post to carry a Camper Longflap? OK, so these are annoying ‘cotton-duck’ instead of proper nylon with click-buckles, but they’re otherwise excellent. Mine is now completely knackered after 16 years, but I’ve had the replacement-in-waiting for a couple of years.

I have a couple of rear bag options (Saddle Sacks), but for this trip it gave me the lowest total weight like this. The bike handled perfectly fine and I have no complaints.

I had a touring load on once that caused a nearly constant speed wobble. I nearly went straight back home. After a few minutes of practice, I found that I could stay light on the bars and stop it from happening. It was a little stressful, though. Luckily it was only an overnight trip, 40 miles each way.

It would be a bit harder to ride with my knees clamped on the top tube, though.

    I understand how maintenance

I understand how maintenance can vastly improve bearing life, but how can maintenance prevent the sprockets from digging into the splines? I find it hard to imagine that any reasonable amount of torque on the locknut will create enough sprocket-to-sprocket friction to prevent this. You can produce at least 100 N-m torque on the sprocket when pedaling.

Better freehub bodies have at least one steel spline to prevent this. Apparently Hunt’s don’t.

On the other hand, I bought their Adventure Disc 650B wheelset last year, and it’s still going great after more than 6700 miles, including a real winter (midwest USA.) I’m still on my first cassette, so I’m hoping not to find mine looking like that when I go to replace it.

Thanks! I seriously poked around for a few minutes and did not find that.

So, a $12 discount on $42-$50 tape. This tape had better be fantastic!
