I don’t bother with any sort

I don’t bother with any sort of cycling shorts or pad for a 45 minute ride. Just do it in some comfortable clothing.

Exactly. On a pavement, in a hallway, or in the middle of the park, a person walking can (not) do all those things in perfect safety. But on a shared path, they suddenly need to be vigilant so that a cyclist doesn’t collide with them.

I too have been very mildly

I too have been very mildly frustrated by people doing other than what I expect on a shared path. As an annoyance, it’s right up there with my beer being 2 °C too warm or cold, or having to wait ten seconds to enter the pub as a party of five is coming out the door.

I’d recommend something designed for mountain biking, rather than for football.

    I find the Strava Global

I find the Strava Global Heatmap useful to see where other cyclists are riding. I’ve discovered some great quiet roads using it.

I’ve been considering capturing a piece of cloth between the ball and the socket, then trimming the excess, to add some tightness and friction. Fnarr.

I tried the cloth thing, but even fairly thin cloth in there was too much. However, I now have a piece of string trapped in there and it’s tightened it up enough that it doesn’t move around unless I bump it.

I haven’t tried this, but a filled steam bun / baozi / 包子 / nikuman would probably be brilliant. They’re a common convenience store food in Japan. Mostly carb, a bit of protein and fat in the filling. Best hot, but okay cold.

How about a pasty, heavy on the crust and veg, light on the meat (or no meat if you’re vegan or vegetarian)?

My commute is nine miles each

My commute is nine miles each way right now. I’m considering moving, possibly over fifteen miles from work. At that distance, I’d either drive a couple of days a week and cycle every other day, or get an e-bike. I’m not going to spend over two hours a day cycling to and from work (although in the winters it sometimes already takes me that long.)

Wow! Here in the US, they’re definitely not big on public transport, but my local bus system costs $1 (75p) per ride or $3 (£2.25) for unlimited rides in a day, and is half price for students, disabled, veterans, and seniors over 65.

Also, $40 (£30) for an unlimited 30-day pass.

The downside is it’s not very convenient, and I can generally get anywhere faster by bicycle.

I’ve had it done to me once,

I’ve had it done to me once, as I was riding on the very wide shoulder of a 45 MPH road. The truck got stopped at the next red light, and was in the lane to go straight. I started sprinting, and suspect he saw me coming as he suddenly decided that he needed to turn instead (right on red, USA.) Coward.

    The only obviously friendly

The only obviously friendly use of a horn I’ve experienced is when a friend has seen me out on my bike. If they’re going the opposite direction, I can usually see who it is, especially if their window is down. If they’re passing me, a couple of short toots after they’ve done so is much less alarming than while they’re still behind me. If they honk while still behind me, my middle finger may already be up before I realize who it is.
