I commuted with this strapped
I commuted with this strapped to the back of my fatbike from about the 26th of October to Halloween a few years ago. It had a spare pulsing rear light inside and looked pretty cool in the dark.
Some people think I’m a bit strange.
I’ve said this before somewhere, but like on any of the heavy, dangerous machines I am around at my work, and like many race cars, there should be a large E-Stop button on the dash which physically cuts all power to the drivetrain with the minimum complexity possible. Not a signal on a 5 V line to a CPU somewhere politely requesting a shutdown. On a combustion powered car, it should shut off power to the solenoid controlling a normally closed valve on the fuel near the injector rail. On an electric car, shut off power to normally open solenoids on all poles of power to the motors or controller.
In the UK, its functionality should be tested as part of the MOT.

I ride in about everything, but I’ve waited out the heaviest bits of lightning storms, or left earlier to avoid them. Tornados I wait out whether I’m cycling or driving. I’ve taken rides with people before when there’s been unexpected harsh weather I wasn’t prepared for, like cold rain with no gear.

On the occasional day I drive
On the occasional day I drive to work, I come off a 55 MPH road onto a half mile long 15 MPH driveway. I have no trouble holding my 2005 MINI to 15±1 MPH by the engine sound and an occasional glance at the speedometer. I don’t have to stare at it continuously.
Maybe it helps that it’s a manual transmission and I can just put it in second gear.

Ti bikes (or bikes of any
Ti bikes (or bikes of any material, really) can be made very light, or very strong, or a balance between the two. For a bike that’s supposed to be a fun ride and not, say, part of an abused fleet of bikeshare bikes, the designer is going to choose tubing that can take normal riding loads for that type of bike, with a bit of a safety factor.
I’m sure a frame could be made that can take a crash like that, but would you have bought the frame if it weighed 1-2 kg more?
A bit over half my cycling is
A bit over half my cycling is commuting, with 90 miles a week being the work commute. I have one bicycle set up tubeless and running lovely light René Herse tyres. No regrets. I do occasionally get slow leaks that require me to top up the tyres every day or two, but that’s less frustrating than having a ride interrupted by a puncture, especially having to repair one in the pouring rain, or freezing weather, or oppressive heat.
On the tubeless tyres, I’m now at over 14,000 miles / 23,000 km and twice have needed to use a plug to get going during a ride. I’ve never had to remove the wheel or install a tube. This is close to an order of magnitude better than my general experience with tubes.
I have been impressed with the puncture resistance of the Bontrager tyres that came on the Trek District I bought this year, right now at 2200 miles / 3500 km with no punctures. However, they are quite slow rolling with a woodenly harsh ride, so I plan to convert that bike to tubeless and install some Gravel Kings or G-Ones when they finally do me the favour of wearing out. The Trek is intended to be my “just works every time” commuting and pub bike, with its belt drive, internal hub, mudguards, and generator lighting.

I was stopped at a light once, and a pedestrian, perhaps a bit OCD, was pressing the button about every second for over a minute.
