Which cars can actually fit a road bike in the boot? (Crowdsourced project)

One of things that always been most frustrating for me when trying to find a car to buy as a cyclist is figuring out whether my bike fits inside (with the seats down) without taking the bike apart.

There tend to be lots of comments of the type – “why don’t you just take a wheel off”, or “why don’t you just use a bike rack”, but I find it way more convenient to do neither of these things, and just put the bike in the back.

To try to meet this need not just for me, but for other people too, I’ve built a simple community-driven website where people can share cars they own (or have used) and whether a road bike fits (with the wheels on).

    Here’s the link: https://norackneeded.co.uk/

I’ve put in examples of cars I know about but it really depends on other people putting ones in too for it to be more useful. If you’ve ever got your bike in a car in one piece (or have found you can’t!) I’d love if you could add your car + whether it fits.

Hopefully it’ll save people a loads of time when buying their next car.

    Thanks!

    Chris.

You’re not going to visit the county’s best ‘cello teacher by any chance?

No, it’s a big car that allows me to drive 240 miles from Somerset to Liverpool every 6 weeks or so and drive to Kent slightly less frequently in reasonable comfort. I have ridden to Liverpool once in a day but I couldn’t take much in the way of luggage!!!

Sorry if my choice of car offended you.

Great idea, but it needs to take account of the size and type of bike.

I ride XL/61cm framed bikes due to my own XL frame! I have a BMW 3 series GT, which has a very long but not very tall boot due to the coupe style hatch. Some drop bar bikes will fit in laid down with no adjustments, but others (e.g endurance geometry with taller head tubes don’t quite go).  MTBs with wide flat bars don’t go in at all without a wheel off and the seat dropped down.

I can see how you could tow it on the bike leg, but how do you manage on the swim?

Being a triathlete (and a musician who occasionally has to carry a stage piano), always have a car that lets me do this (although my Saab 93 was a bit of a pain to load as it was a saloon with fold down seats rather than a hatchback).

Last car was a Mondeo … cavernous boot, more than big enough for my road bike laid on its side, wheels on, literally slot it in and take it out in one piece.

Current car is a Seat Leon ST (i.e. estate), not quite as cavernous as the Mondeo but more big enough to slot the bike in and out in one piece without any messing around. It also has the added bonus of driving more like the Saab than the Mondeo.

How appropriate, as Arizona is the test site for the SkyNet-bots featured in the other topic. Big cars, bots carrying tiny packages that should be carried by the recipients themselves, by bike

Got to reply, as I really like my Tucson! But yes, you can get the bike in laid on it’s side.

The best car I had for bikes was the Ford Galaxy, you could wheel bikes in upright once the bakc seats were taken out – just needed plenty of garage space to store the seats!

Nice, but where is the pic of the carry around tool kit?

😁 it’s in front of the middle bike, to the left of the wheel bag.

My wife’s Nissan Leaf (2011-2017) will fit a bike with both wheels on.

I can confirm that the (BMW) MINI convertible (R52) through 2008 will NOT fit one.
