Which cars can actually fit a road bike in the boot? (Crowdsourced project)

One of things that always been most frustrating for me when trying to find a car to buy as a cyclist is figuring out whether my bike fits inside (with the seats down) without taking the bike apart.

There tend to be lots of comments of the type – “why don’t you just take a wheel off”, or “why don’t you just use a bike rack”, but I find it way more convenient to do neither of these things, and just put the bike in the back.

To try to meet this need not just for me, but for other people too, I’ve built a simple community-driven website where people can share cars they own (or have used) and whether a road bike fits (with the wheels on).

    Here’s the link: https://norackneeded.co.uk/

I’ve put in examples of cars I know about but it really depends on other people putting ones in too for it to be more useful. If you’ve ever got your bike in a car in one piece (or have found you can’t!) I’d love if you could add your car + whether it fits.

Hopefully it’ll save people a loads of time when buying their next car.

    Thanks!

    Chris.

It was tricky manoeuvring the rear wheel and frame under the shelf, and the bars literally just fit underneath but it was doable if necessary.

Stage pianos by comparison are a breeze. Ours is a Korg, full 84 key range, but the frame it sits in is just one extra inch of metal at each end and three inches above housing the controls. Even in the hard case, fold a seat down and just slide it in.

    Overmany years over mixed car

Over many years over mixed car/bike commuting I’ve run a number of cars with a bike in the back. The best  few were a Suzuki Wagn R (awesome fun to thrash around too!), A Renault Scenic, a nissan Sunny Coupe ZX, and my current beast – converted VW transporter. The latter allows me to carry the bike inside with wheels on (even with mudgards lengthening the commute bike), and also to sleep/change in the van at races. Yes converted vans are expensive, but nothing beats them, and you’d pay similar money for a crappy Tesla which likely won;t fit your bike

The Abbey HAG is the green thing at the lower front.

    I want some Abbey.

Their multi tool could be had with a JIS bit, but now I’d rather the daysaver with JIS upgrade.

And something I might kind of need…

The crombie would have been the one, but because I’ve gone rohloff less necessary.

Thanks for the info here! You’re absolutely right – there are variables.

Someone asked for this model to be added to the options earlier today (maybe you? If so – thanks) which I’ve done now, and added your notes in too.
