Which cars can actually fit a road bike in the boot? (Crowdsourced project)

One of things that always been most frustrating for me when trying to find a car to buy as a cyclist is figuring out whether my bike fits inside (with the seats down) without taking the bike apart.

There tend to be lots of comments of the type – “why don’t you just take a wheel off”, or “why don’t you just use a bike rack”, but I find it way more convenient to do neither of these things, and just put the bike in the back.

To try to meet this need not just for me, but for other people too, I’ve built a simple community-driven website where people can share cars they own (or have used) and whether a road bike fits (with the wheels on).

    Here’s the link: https://norackneeded.co.uk/

I’ve put in examples of cars I know about but it really depends on other people putting ones in too for it to be more useful. If you’ve ever got your bike in a car in one piece (or have found you can’t!) I’d love if you could add your car + whether it fits.

Hopefully it’ll save people a loads of time when buying their next car.

    Thanks!

    Chris.

Most full-size MPVs are ridiculous, my ex has a Citroen Picasso full-fat (2015), drop the seats and bikes fit in standing up. You could probably get in 3.

I just hit search without entering any criteria and a list was produced.  I couldn’t tell how it was sorted though.   It would help if the list was sorted by make and model, alphabetically   You could even produce the list on the page without having to press anything and then give options to filter only.

Looks like a nice ride, and a lovely setup.

If you let me know a model year that you know fits, I can add them to the database too.

The Caddy models designated “typ2K”, from 2004 – 2019. Life means it’s a van derived car (class M1 not N1 on V5), and Maxi is the LWB version. The latter will take road bikes with the 2nd row seats just folded forwards, on the non-Maxi SWB version, the rear seats have to be taken out (they’re removable in minutes).

An example of a 2017 LWB Caddy with 3x road bikes in the back. OK, the front wheels are removed and there is technically a rack for them to stand on, but in theory one could just chuck them in fully intact and bungie them down, I prefer to have them a little more secure though.

Hi – yep, these are good ideas – thank you!

You can view the whole list at the moment by clicking the number on the homepage, but you can’t filter yet.

I am going to change the search so that you only have to specify a make (so, effectively, you’ll be able to see the whole list, only ones that fit, or all of a particular make). Hopefully today.

    Thanks again!

    Would be useful to either:

    Would be useful to either:

    (a) just show the whole list, with search / filtering as an option; or

    (b) variation on that theme – only show in the drop-down lists those models for which you actually hold data.

At the moment the UI means I have to select both a make and a model, then hit search – only to find out you don’t actually have any data for the Hyundai i10 (which almost certainly won’t) or the Skoda Superb estate (which almost certainly will, and some – because they’re flippin massive).

Yeah – I reckon you’re right. Probably there are some van-derived cars that could do this…but I don’t know which ones. 🙂

VW Caddy Life and Caddy Maxi Life with the rear seats folded forward. They’re not on your drop-down list unfortunately.

    Skoda do an internal bike

Skoda do an internal bike rack for their estate cars, you need to take the front wheels off though.
