Which cars can actually fit a road bike in the boot? (Crowdsourced project)

One of things that always been most frustrating for me when trying to find a car to buy as a cyclist is figuring out whether my bike fits inside (with the seats down) without taking the bike apart.

There tend to be lots of comments of the type – “why don’t you just take a wheel off”, or “why don’t you just use a bike rack”, but I find it way more convenient to do neither of these things, and just put the bike in the back.

To try to meet this need not just for me, but for other people too, I’ve built a simple community-driven website where people can share cars they own (or have used) and whether a road bike fits (with the wheels on).

    Here’s the link: https://norackneeded.co.uk/

I’ve put in examples of cars I know about but it really depends on other people putting ones in too for it to be more useful. If you’ve ever got your bike in a car in one piece (or have found you can’t!) I’d love if you could add your car + whether it fits.

Hopefully it’ll save people a loads of time when buying their next car.

    Thanks!

    Chris.

Added a Toyota auris but it needs to be the ‘estate’ model and not the base one.

    Yeah – I reckon you’re right.

Yeah – I reckon you’re right. Probably there are some van-derived cars that could do this…but I don’t know which ones. 🙂

I always quite liked the Fiat Multipla, but it’s fair to say it divided opinion!

    Wow…! Yeah, that doesn’t

Wow…! Yeah, that doesn’t meet the criteria, but all the more impressive for it!

    Doesn’t meet your no wheels

Doesn’t meet your no wheels off criteria I’m afraid but I can’t resist sharing this photo from back in the day when we had a car proving that a Smart ForTwo (two seater) could take a pair of full sized adult race bikes in the boot! It was always fun pulling into the car park at Box Hill or Richmond Park, we would invariably get other cyclists coming over to have a look and see how it was done.

    Not relevant now, but 25

Not relevant now, but 25 years ago, which was before I cycled, I had a Fiat Multipla.

It had 2 rows of 3 seats and the rear 3 were easily removable, I remember that the list of accessories included a fitting which held bikes upright in the rear of the car.

Maybe current van shaped passenger vehicles offer a similar option.

    Best of luck Chris.

    Best of luck Chris.

Never driven, and since going qr back in the early 80s always stripped her down.

Though with big mudguards on the current huge ultimate commuter, a bit of knowledge of where I could even try to get her in would be great.

    Kudos to you.
