A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

its as though there’s a gap

its as though there’s a gap in the law, and one that any conscientious government would want to set aside Parliamentry time to address.  The law and HC are a bit vague on the point,  of “I’m in my seventies, feeling a bit odd, the best thing to do right now is drive home 2 hours/ 80 miles.”

I guess drivers wanting to add to the list of why no action should be taken will be running the “surely what’s happened punishment enough?” argument. So yet another one-up for the idea of the consequence-free medical episode (see also: mechanical defect) driver free pass / it was unavoidable bank.

DVLA can of course revoke a licence on medical grounds, but you’d have to hope he gave it up voluntarily.

    Hasn’t he incriminated

Hasn’t he incriminated himself ? He’s basically confessed to careless driving as a minimum.

If it can dealt with under

If it can dealt with under civil law, they will just walk away.

Although you’d think a guaranteed prosecution would improve their KPIs !

Woman killed in Colwyn Bay crash after husband ‘blacked out’ and crashed into tree

He told his wife he was feeling unwell and light-headed, and just wanted to get home.

“As I went along it got worse and worse,” he said. “I remember going round the roundabout but don’t remember anything (after) then.”

Mr Brough said he had never suffered a blackout previously but the inquest heard that while visiting his wife in hospital he became unresponsive twice, once for five seconds and the second time for 20-30 minutes.

She had been informed by North Wales Police that there was insufficient evidence for there to be a realistic prospect of conviction and so no charges would be brought against Mr Brough.

Of course no charges would be brought. I mean, what could he have done to prevent it? It was totally unpreventable. What do you mean that he could have stopped as it was getting worse and worse? You heathen! All praise the motor car

It would seem reasonable to me that if his symptoms were getting worse and worse then he probably ought to have pulled over rather than risk other road users’ lives?  Not just plough on.  Surely that’s careless driving or SOMETHING??

Why yes, yes it is fraud and a pretty naive attempt at that.

He signed a Tomlin Order formally admitting his claim was dishonest, confirming he was not in the vehicle at the time of the collision. No damages were paid.

But isn’t fraud a crime?  It doesn’t say that the police have followed this up.

    Ah, public health.  From what

Ah, public health.  From what I see, they’re a polite bunch who tend to take a low key approach, referring to things like, congestion, pollution, opportunities for exercise, perhaps getting a bit chippy around junk food/ diet.  Substance use will be another factor.

Starting Well: A whole system approach to childhood obesity. (Cycling, not being driven everywhere)
Staying well: Maintaining independence through integrated, proactive and personalised care and support.
Connecting Well: Supporting communities to be physically and creatively active. (E.g. Cycling)
Financially well: Maximising opportunities for skills, training and employment.(e.g. not having your bank a/c emptied by a car you can’t really afford/ not having all the jobs on out of the way industrial estates)

This is Emmanuel College High School, Bradford. Like many schools, it has railings separating the pedestrian pupils on the pavement from speeding motorists on the carriageway, for their protection. It is much less useful in protecting pedestrians when the driver is on the pavement, crashing into the INSIDE of the railings. I stared at this car for about a minute, and still couldn’t work out how the driver managed it.

Another argument against bloated modern cars.  You see, if they’d been driving an original old Mini then it would have fitted on that footway and they would have just carried on trucking

No, no, no! How can you be so silly? The answer is for cars to become more bloated. If the car had been bigger it wouldn’t have been able to fit behind the barrier and wouldn’t have got stuck. If the car was big enough, it would have destroyed the barrier and not had to stop at all (as long as the windscreen wipers are good enough to clean off the pedestrians). The answer to this is Canyonero!

    In our car-dominated world,

In our car-dominated world, sometimes it’s the little things that remind me that mass motoring has no future:

But Cllr Darling said the proposed development would depend on residents using their cars.

“The only access would be the already-dangerous A379,” he said. “We have seen multiple crashes and a fatality within the last year on this road. Adding an extra 240 cars daily is a recipe for disaster.”

We’re in Devon, at the northerly edge of Torquay and proposals for the redevelopment of a disused Sladnor holiday park. If you’re of a certain age, I recommend the collection of photos on Flickr of happier times and the current dereliction.
