A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

A Tesco spokesperson said that its parent and child bays are there to help parents of young children who may need additional space to get their child in and out of their car and into a pram or buggy. The bays are clearly marked and the conditions of their use advertised on signage in our car parks. If those conditions of use are breached then a parking enforcement contractor (in Tesco car parks where enforcements are in place) may issue a penalty charge notice.A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “For added convenience we offer a limited number of parking bays specifically for customers shopping with children. Our parent and child bays are for customers accompanied by one or more children up to the age of 12.”

This is an interesting tale
This is an interesting tale as it will be played out across the land as councils look for still more budget cuts and now it’s children in the front line of all this. The article goes on a bit as drivers implode (on themselves) that that road is not safe for little Jimmy to walk along. In reality, less school buses means ever more cars – “it’s too dangerous to walk to school – here, I’ll drive you.”
In rural areas, A roads and many B roads are entirely the domain of the car now. As a walker you tolerate unclassified roads, but keep most of them to a minimum. It’s been quite the land grab since the 1940s when the law on free school buses was framed.
A sample of that driver implosion: “Local Facebook pages have gone a bit mad on the subject,” she said. “If you’re in Truthwall, walking that main road when hedges and verges are often overgrown in the summer is hazardous. It’s a narrow road where if a double-decker bus comes there’s not enough room for a car. It’s not a wide road and the national speed limit is on part of it – it’s just not a safe route to have youngsters walking.” Well, quite, no-one would choose that for themselves.
Governments have flunked changing the law since the 1940s. Summarised at the end of the article, the “3 mile rule” (two if in years 1-3) is based on measured walking routes, which gets to be fun in rural areas. The law has been interpreted that the child is “accompanied as necessary”.
If eligible, you get free home/school transport, normally a bus pass, if your home / school walking distance is over the limit. That of course has the added benefits of being warm/dry and safe (personal safety, road safety), so is highly prized and fought over as it’s a handy timesaver.
As ever, drivers write themselves and their choices out of the story: “We cannot rear our children the way we were reared – that world sadly no longer exists.”

Mr Loophole said that?
My legal counsel also insisted that Police Scotland can go huff a bag of squirrel scat.

Crackdown on school-run driving starts as parents told they could face fines on these streets
CCTV and ANPR technology rolled out to enforce rules which have been largely ignored by parents
Walsall Council said the rules had previously been in place but had been largely ignored, hence the decision to put up CCTV cameras and make use of ANPR technology.

I guess that motorhome driver doesn’t bother looking at the road signs when he’s using his satnav, even then, I’m surprised they even made it into Mill Road in the first place, it’s not exactly invitingly wide!

£30m for a “one more lane
£30m for a “one more lane will fix it” instal. Drivers have zero understanding of how much £££ is pumped into supporting them – I wonder when the next whinge-fest over a £1.8m cycle path will be.

Newington villagers call for A2 drivers to stop breaking 20mph limit after speed signs are vandalised

Interesting to see quite an extensive 20 mph zone in place, but I bet it took some doing. You can see the sense of the Welsh approach as for Restricted Roads it puts the boot on the other foot: drivers have to make the case: “how does your wish to go faster trump safety and local amenity? Why do you need to go faster?”

Medway Council scrap free car
Medway Council scrap free car parking on Mondays
Cllr Tris Osborne, the portfolio holder covering parking enforcement, said: “Unfortunately, due to the challenging financial situation we have found the council in, we are no longer able to continue the free parking Monday scheme that was introduced in April.”
I guess if you’re needing to save £2.70 on car parking, you’re not going to be swelling the local shops’ cofffers all that much.
