A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

From the piece: “One witness said he did not think Rashid would have had any time to react.” At 41mph, perhaps not. At the posted 30mph, then very much likely he would have had time to react.

Wrong sentence: he should have been jailed.

    National Trust makes

National Trust makes ‘devastating’ decision on Devon coast

“We thought they were our friends”

Reading this one between the lines, it’s mainly about “I want to park my car for free”, rather than I dunno nature conservation. It was £55 for a permit for locals under the outgoing arrangement, and seniors can join the NT for £68.

Of the two accounts given of what has happened, I tend to believe the NT:

[Cllr Cook, parish council chairman] adds: “Unilaterally, and without any prior consultation, the National Trust has decided not to renew a long-standing lease with Mortehoe Parish Council, the body looking after the interest of the two local communities of Woolacombe and Mortehoe.”

The National Trust released a statement saying: “The National Trust opened discussions about the changes in December 2022. Since then, the charity has met with the Parish Council regularly… to discuss various options to work together and…offering solutions to several of their concerns which were refused. The National Trust has repeatedly offered to preserve the employment of the council staff at Marine Drive and this was refused.” (abridged by me for repetition)

EDIT : it does look like from the Parish Council minutes in spring 2023 like the NT did indeed unilaterally decide in late 2022 not to renew the Marine Drive lease. There also appear to have been discussions between the parties through 2023, but no detail is given: no meeting of minds, it would seem. Curious as to why this story now.

Yup.  Apparently average speeds are around 11 – 13 mph in inner London, about 20mph in outer London.

Depends where. My driving commute to work is 15 minutes, but not many others would consider cycling the nine miles each way even if there were a nice safe, flat route. There’s no traffic where I live, though.

Where logic or “theory” clashes with reality though – the stats apparently show this is a real thing AND when relatively simple measures are applied there is a measurable improvement. https://www.roadpeace.org/working-for-change/graduated-driving-licensing/ https://www.racfoundation.org/media-centre/study-confirms-benefits-of-graduated-driver-licensing Policing – agree that a) needs police and b) a subtle approach to avoid “police stopping us just ‘cos we’re young”.

Well if there’s a need for a graduated driving license (and it does look like there’s a good case for it), then let’s have a graduated driving license with additional tests to let young drivers take passengers or drive after midnight. Instead, we get a half measure that assumes that maturity is purely linked to age and develops at the same rate in people.

As we’ve seen previously, grieving individuals frequently do not make for good legislators.

All of this can be controlled via driver ID systems that should be built into every car – engaging safe mode if it believes the driver (of any age) is hooleying around. I don’t see much point, as things stand, in giving the police something else to try to look out for.
