Canyon has today rolled out its bike customisation programme in Europe, meaning that more customers can access the MyCanyon service it says offers increased fitting options and “dream-level” spec choices.

The MyCanyon programme was already available to customers in North America and Asia, the brand saying it hopes the European market will follow those regions’ “successful launches” earlier in the year.

MyCanyon for Europe-based customers was made live on Canyon’s website from today, buyers now able to customise their purchase with custom paint colours, component options, fit tweaks, and unique design touches. The rather large caveat at this point is that MyCanyon remains only available to riders buying the brand’s top-of-the-range aero race bike, the Aeroad CFR. Unsurprisingly, the customisation options come with a weightier price tag too, the MyCanyon Aeroad CFR starting at €10,499, €500 more than the regular option.

So what do you get for your extra outlay? Well, on the paint job front you can get one of Canyon’s three ‘Fabrio Collection’ colours and choose between gold or black for the Canyon branding. However, the ‘Mano Collection’ is €200 more (on top of your initial €500 extra), while an ‘Opus Limited Edition’ paint job takes the price €1,000 above the regular Aeroad CFR before you’ve even looked at any components.

Canyon says the additional cost is due to the hand-painted nature of the MyCanyon frames, which “require a high level of skill and extra time to complete each frame”.

You’ll be starting with a 12-speed Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 or SRAM Red AXS-equipped Aeroad CFR, so the MyCanyon customisations mainly concern your wheels and front end. Canyon will give you several stem lengths to choose between, based on the recommended length for your frame size, that bike-fit tweak included in the €500 MyCanyon cost.

Canyon’s classic drops are also standard and at no extra cost, although fitting the “aero fit” drops (that “save up to 14 watts”) is an extra €100. DT Swiss ARC 1100 DICUT db 55 wheels are the standard spec option, but buyers wanting ZIPP 454 NSW 28 XDRs can add another €900 to their bill.

The final customisation option is a choice of three Sella Italia saddles, the SLR Boost 3D KIT Carbonio Superflow costing an extra €100, while the SLR Boost Tekno Superflow costs an extra €150.

It all essentially means that the CFR with standard spec is €9,999, with MyCanyon its €10,499 for minor fit tweaks and a fun non-standard colourscheme, and maxes out at just north of €12,000 with all the MyCanyon add-ons, including limited edition artist-designed paint job.

Customisation is quite widespread across the bike industry now, numerous other brands also offering services similar to MyCanyon. Trek, for example, has its Project One which offers customisation across its Madone, Domane, Checkmate, Domane+ and Speed Concept, and gives customers the ability to change even more stuff, such as tyres, bars, bottom bracket, wheels and even bar tape.

Likewise, Project One is available to a wider range of bikes than MyCanyon and has more paint job options, although admittedly many of them are significantly more expensive than Canyon’s, rising to £1,650 extra for an ‘ICON’ finish or £3,850 extra for a ‘Chroma’ finish.

Similarly, Ridley, Ribble, Orbea and some other brands offer extensive customisation options too, with more groupset and wheel options than Canyon. However, that’s not to say that MyCanyon doesn’t far exceed the customisation offering of many other bike brands who don’t prioritise that part of the buying experience.

It’s worth pointing out that Canyon says it plans to add more of its bikes to MyCanyon in the future. The brand also says it “will be monitoring customer feedback closely to learn and adapt the programme”, namely with “a strategy to be able to offer more customisation options in future when there is demand for it”.

So it seems likely we can expect more models, components and finishing kit options in the future.

Canyon is also confident the MyCanyon customer journey is “seamless” and boosted by “best-in-class” 3D renders which bring your bike to life as you tweak things, keeping you updated with a “transparent cost breakdown” of exactly what you’re paying for.

“The purchase process takes place on Canyon.com or the Canyon App in local languages with a seamless and intuitive user experience and a clever 3D augmented reality feature allowing customers to envision their dream build in-situ with the ability to view colours and components from various angles,” Canyon says.

Customers are told to expect orders to take between six and 12 weeks, with order status trackable via the app. The next region to get access to MyCanyon is expected to be Asia-Pacific in March/April before the remaining Rest of the World market is included this time next year.
