The Lezyne Universal Strap is a simple and effective method for attaching things like inner tubes and tools to your bike without having to faff with a saddle bag or suchlike. It won’t protect them from the elements, but it works.

If you want to carry tools and tubes on your ride but don’t want to resort to a seatpack or saddle bag, the Universal Strap is ideal. It’s 500mm long and 47mm wide, has Velcro to tighten everything down, a grippy texture to keep hold of everything, and a soft-touch finish to avoid damaging any paintwork.

I’ve used it to carry a tube, multi-tool and tyre levers, and as long as everything was arranged sensibly, it gripped it all without a struggle, even out on the trails.

As with any strap design, there’s no protection from the weather, so you’re going to run the risk of things like your multi-tool getting wet – and potentially rusty – if you’re out in the rain. And I would definitely recommend ensuring your frame is nice and clean before you attach the strap, maybe even having some form of protection to reduce the chance of any damage.

At £11.50 it’s not badly priced compared with some – Effetto Mariposa’s Espresso Strap Lungo does more or less the same thing and costs around £14, though you do get two straps there, and Muc-Off’s Utility Frame Strap is £20, but you get extra elastic loops to help carry things.

> Emergency essentials: 10 things to take with you every ride

You can pick up bundles of straps from the likes of Amazon for a lot less – a pack of 10 (25 x 500mm) for £7.99, for example – but they don’t look to be as kind to your paintwork.

If you wanted a bit more protection, for a bit more money, Topeak offers its Burrito Wrap for £35. George thought it was decent, with a few pockets so you can wrap your stuff up in it, but it still doesn’t keep out the elements totally.

> Easy and effective ways to carry stuff on your bike

Overall, this is an easy way to carry stuff on your bike, as long as you’re happy with them being exposed to the elements.

Verdict

Neat, easy-to-use and functional strap for flexible carrying
