The Lezyne Smart Energy Caddy is an updated version of a product we reviewed back in 2015, when its sole purpose was to carry – as per the name – a few energy gels or bars. It’s now back a decade later with ‘Smart’ added to the name, looking to also cater to the now ubiquitous smartphone-carrying requirement of most riders.

The Lezyne Smart Energy Caddy is designed to mount on your top tube and carry a phone, cards and some keys, along with some energy gels. It has a robust bottom section made of moulded EVA foam, with a small inner mesh pocket covering the bottom quarter of the voluminous storage space. I easily fitted keys, tissues and snacks into the 0.5-litre capacity, which helped make my back jersey pockets considerably tidier.

A zipped surround connects this section to the top part of the caddy, and the zip has a large, robust plastic finger grip, making it easy to open while wearing gloves.

The top compartment holds a very small 4- to 5-inch smartphone such as a Google Pixel Pro 10. If your phone’s external dimensions are 13cm x 8cm or smaller, it will fit. Any larger and you won’t be so lucky. Unfortunately, this considerably narrows the options these days. For example, it cuts out Samsung’s smallest phone, the S25, as well as most, if not all, iPhones.

If yours fits, the clear plastic cover does however provide effective rainproofing and perfectly decent touchscreen responsiveness. There is a Velcro strap to stop your phone falling out, which was much needed when I tested the caddy on step-through or sloping top tube bikes.

The top section also has a card holder, perfect for keeping the emergency fiver that John Stevenson reviewed.

The caddy attaches by way of three Velcro straps, one around the stem and two more for the top tube. These were well sewn on but the length, whilst accommodating all but the fattest of tubes, made for an untidy finish. The straps were backed with faux leather, but I still found they had a tendency to slip to the right during a ride, especially if I hit a pothole.

At 81g, there was no noticeable weight to the caddy and, in black with a reflective trim, it neither stood out from nor blended in with my bike.

Value

At £32, the Lezyne Smart Energy Caddy is a little more expensive than the Topeak Bento Pack (£24.99) and the significantly more sizeable BTR Deluxe Bike Bag Phone Holder, Phone Mount & Waterproof Rain Cover GEN 5 (£25.99).

Elsewhere, it’s more than twice as expensive as most of the generic offerings on Amazon, such as the Faireach bike frame bag or the Vitalisimo bike bag.

Conclusion

Overall, if you need basic on-bike storage and your phone predates today’s larger handhelds, then this is a functional top-tube-mounted caddy with some thoughtful touches. There is an XL model available which we haven’t tested, but with an external length of 16.8cm my shiny new iPhone is still unlikely to fit.

Verdict

Spacious top tube caddy, if your phone can fit in it
