At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Every cyclist needs a decent cap in their wardrobe as they definitely have their uses whatever the weather. This ZigZag model from Lusso is one of the more basic hats you'll find in the marketplace, but it is very sensibly priced and provides plenty of protection from the sun and rain.

Lusso has created the main part of the hat with eight segments of fabric, which gives a very rounded head piece. It sits a little higher above the top of the scalp than, say, Primal's Neon Crush, which uses three panels for a much snugger fit.

Using more segments also means more seams and they all meet in the centre to create quite a hard piece of fabric right on top of the head. It wasn't noticeable when wearing the cap on its own, but put a helmet over the top and if part of its internal structure happens to be sat there too, you will notice the pressure point.

The cap is 100% polyester in its construction and seems pretty breathable considering the amount of heat to leave your head, but it does get a bit overwhelmed if things are really hot, with the small sweatband running around the outside unable to keep all perspiration out of your eyes.

The material feels a bit harsh and scratchy, too, compared with a lot of other caps I wear.

On the plus side, the peak is a good size, giving plenty of shelter for your eyes from rain and low sun, and it is sturdy enough that even when it is completely saturated it doesn't sag in front of your eyes.

Aside from the few quibbles it is a decent price at £10.99, cheaper than the Primal at £15 and the recently tested Chapeau! Cotton cap, so with that in mind if you just fancy a basic head cover in a funky design the Lusso is pretty good value for money.

Verdict

A simple cap that'll take on the elements, but it's not as comfortable as some

Lusso recommends hand wash only but I bunged it in the machine on a 30 degree wash with the rest of my kit and it was fine.

Overall the ZigZag cap is a decent performer at a good price. It does the job and looks pretty fetching, but I'd rather pay a bit more for a nicer material.

About the tester

Age: 38  Height: 180cm  Weight: 76kg

I usually ride: This month's test bike  My best bike is: Kinesis Aithein

I've been riding for: 10-20 years  I ride: Every day  I would class myself as: Expert

I regularly do the following types of riding: time trialling, commuting, club rides, sportives, fixed/singlespeed

Since writing his first bike review for road.cc back in early 2009 senior product reviewer Stu has tested more than a thousand pieces of kit, and hundreds of bikes.

With an HND in mechanical engineering and previous roles as a CNC programmer/machinist, draughtsman and development engineer (working in new product design) Stu understands what it takes to bring a product to market. A mix of that knowledge combined with his love of road and gravel cycling puts him in the ideal position to put the latest kit through its paces.

He first made the switch to road cycling in 1999, primarily for fitness, but it didn’t take long for his competitive side to take over which led to around ten years as a time triallist and some pretty decent results. These days though riding is more about escapism, keeping the weight off and just enjoying the fact that he gets to ride the latest technology as part of his day job.

I have one of these hats, and the fit and breathability is fine for me, and don't find the fabric a problem on my baldy head.
